Fairing vibration ?

I have a vibration in the left side of the fairing on a GS500F at around 4000 rpm. I can touch the outside of the fairing or reach down and touch the inner plastic of the fairing and it stops. I have checked all the screws and push pins and everything is tight and I cannot see any cracks or anything loose.
I've tried some weather stripping stuck to both sides of the fairing to try to take the vibration away with no luck.
Has anyone had this problem or have any ideas ? Any suggestions are welcome, it's not real bad noise just irritating when going through the gears.

Have you tried removing the fairings entirely and then remounting?

Have you tried running the bike with the fairings removed entirely? (naked) Does the noise persist?

Have you tightened the mounting brackets that the fairing pieces attach to?

Is it just the left or just the right?

Is this the "LOWER FAIRINGS" with the big suzuki on it and it blocks easy access to the oil filter, or are we talking the upper fairing that sits behind the speedo and tach?

bikeneil

No I have not removed & remounted.
I have not run the bike without fairing.
I have tightened the fairing brackets.
It is just the left side.
Yes , it is the lower fairing.
If I touch the outer fairing just below where the Suzuki sticker is, or on the inside of the fairing in that area the vibration quits.
Thanks for the suggestions & reply.

I would say remove the lower fairings and take the bike for a ride, see if the noise persists.

If the noise goes away, Good, we have isolated it to the fairing itself or the brackets

If the noise persists, tighten the fairing mounting brackets (they are hard to get to with the fairings on, and you mention not having removed them and remounted). You should find three spots.

So if the noise went away, remount and see if it comes back.  Your description of the location indicates it might be the bracket that also holds the line to the oil cooler (maybe?) and it looks like there are two bolts attaching that to the frame, at least from my pictures last time I had the fairings off.

wish my vibration was there...  :icon_neutral:

got one up near the screen/top fairing area ... cant isolate it or stop it yet ... always running thru 6-7k on the tach ... which is often ... gonna get the silastic tube out soon! >:(

I didn't have much time today but I took the left lower fairing off, still had the vibration. I checked the  brackets while off, they were tight. Put the lower fairing back on and still had the vibration, could still stop it by holding against the fairing with my hand, but now I found that I could hold my hand against the left side of the inner panel (the panel between windshield & gauges) and stop the noise. Now I have both lower fairings & the inner panel off, rode it & no noise. I have now checked all bolts & screws and I cannot find anything loose. I won't get to put it back together until at least tomorrow.

I had a 2001 Ninja 500 once that rattled at idle, rattled at WOT, rattled basically all the time.

Bought a mechanic's stethoscope and traced the noise.  Found out there was a loose joint in the plastics.  Tried a new tighter-fitting plastic push connector, which did nothing.  I then bought some peel-and-stick window foam insulation.  Rattle never heard again.
Bikeless and Broke at the moment...

bikeneil

Where did you put the insulation ? Before I took anything apart I tried some peel & stick camper shell adhesive on both sides of the fairing where the vibration was with no luck.
Thanks for the suggestion & reply.

Keep in mind that this was a Kawasaki, and it's been 6 years, but I think there was a loose plastic joint that had a gap in it.  Put the insulation like a sandwich in between the 2 pieces, and it disappeared.

OK, thanks. I'll try that when I put it back together.

I have it fixed, I rode 100 miles & still no vibration. I put a piece of weather stripping on the ledge just inside the windshield before re-installing the panel between windshield & gauges. Then I put thin rubber washers between that panel and the lower fairing at the screws on each side of the tank & the screws just behind the turn signals. Thanks for the all the suggestions & replys.
