OK. Locally for sale. 1996 GS 15K Kilom or about 9K Miles. The bikes for sale as is with a knock in the bottom end. Shop told him it needed a total rebuild. Motors not smoking and wasn't a track bike.

So what if anything would be knocking.

OK I'll take first shot at this... cam chain tensioner... Bottom ends on these motors were immensely over built... The bottom end was shared with the GS1000, most bikes have the bottom part narrower than the cylinders part... on this its as wide as it can get. Cam chain tensioner is my first bet, can sound awful and scary. Or valve tapping but that is distinctly top end.
Cool.

My bet would be counter balancer shaft bearings. Every used motor we've picked up had bad CS bearings. It will sound like a rod knocking in the bottom end.

I know the reason (it's at our shop) but I can't say anything because it could discredit the seller and it's not my place to say at this point.

Something doesn't add up and the seller may or may not have been aware of the problem at the time (giving him the benefit of the doubt), but it turned out to be very costly for him.

We'll see what happens as of Monday.

He's listed it on GTA with the knock. Says he only put 500 miles on it since last cert or something like that. It's going to be a hard sell with a rebuild required and he's telling people in the list it needs it for sure.

Jenerator

It definitely needs it - I just can't say the cause just yet.

How hard is it to change the counter balancer shaft bearings?

Can you describe some other characteristics of this noise?  Is it steady, or does it occur within a given rev range, or on when on the throttle or off only?  My '96 with 10K has a racket between 3500-6500 rpm, but nothing before or after.

Not my bike so I have not seen it. Just advertised on a local board.

You have to split the bottom cases. You can do it by turning the motor upside down and just popping the bottom case off.

When the countershaft bearings go its a constant knock. I think your problem is the dreaded valve bucket rattle. valve bucket vibrates inside the valve bucket pocket, kinda sounds like you forgot to tighten something up in the head? Only way to fix it is to get a new head, the valve bucket pocket in the head was machined too big from the factory. Not sure how much the buckets them selves vary in size, but you may be able to find a bucket that is a little bigger than the one you have in there and that might help :dunno:

It's been sold to someone else so now I can say what the deal was.  It had ZERO oil in the motor when it was brought in to our shop.
The guy said he had an oil change done at a local shop last September, so either they forgot to put oil in it, or that's  :bs: .  There were a few things the seller said to us that just didn't seem like the truth...he also wouldn't say what he paid for it when he bought it last year.  It had been crashed and he had the forks replaced but the exhaust is cracked and the handlebars need replacing.  Dave has excellent radar and he said the guy was hiding something as soon as we got into our car after going to see the bike at the guy's house.  I guess after being a bike mechanic for almost 20 years, you can tell when someone's not telling the whole story about their bike...

Either way, good luck to the buyer.

GVH, I'm going to try again to get Dave out there to see your 99...we're in the process of moving and we have a funeral to attend this week, so I'm not sure when it'll be, but I'll call you when I can book him for an evening, ok?

Cheers,
Jen

No problem. The Liens off in may.
Just to be clear you get all the GS stuff.

Both frame, complete second harness with black box and Reg Rec, 2 sets of guages, extra set of ugly comsetics and last I bought a new MEZ3 front tire that goes with it. All for the price we discussed.

Chillers going to have a challenge on his hands. I know of a decent motor needing top end freshen up but not sure on the price or if he will sell.

Jenerator

I wish Chiller the best of luck with it.

As well, I just spoke with Dave and we will be in touch with you soon.  Like I said, it's going to be a weird week and I have softball practice on Tuesday if the funeral is not that day.
