strange running problem

long time since i have posted.

i have a 2006 gs500f (with 7,780ish miles) and have now installed a K&N filter(with restriction ring) and a jardine full exhaust.  problem started before i installed the exhaust but a couple hundred miles after i put in the filter.  it seems like its starving for fuel.  normally its when i start the bike and when i try to rev (choke on or off) and it will die out after climbing maybe 1k rpm.  after a few mins  of revving and playing with the throttle, it will run fine as far as i can tell. no dieing or anything.  very random tho bc it may do it one day but not for a few days after. sometimes when going to work and sometimes when going to work, lunch time, and coming home.   tonight i rode to the store and it was fine, came out and it acted up again.  put on the choke and got home.  maybe 2 miles down the road it seemed fine.

did valve clearance check, new plugs, chain adjustment, air filter, and oil change about 4 months ago probably about 500miles ago.   bike fell over in a storm about 2 months ago.  was on its side for maybe 20 mins and stood upright for probably 2 days before being ridden.  the restriction ring fell out when it fell over and i rode it for a few weeks to see how it ran, which seemed fine.  i also think my lines are crossed and res is hooked to on and vice-versa.      thats all the info i can think of that could possibly pertain to the problem

try turning your petcock to the prime or "pri" position. if that fixes your problem its probably the petcock that needs replaced.

oh i have tried turning the petcock to res ( since im pretty sure they are backwards) and it ran for a few mins and tried to cut off while riding.  basically like fuel wasnt flowing at all and i used up what was in the  bowls

Been having a similar problem, but maybe not as severe.  Like wrenchturner said, try the bike on PRIME -- that solves the problem (as a stopgap measure) for me, at least.  I may try ggg's mod on the petcock restrictor plate, but I suspect I'll be ordering a new petcock soon.

so have now torn carbs apart. still seems to act up.  once its hot it runs fine.   but before its hot it wont go past about 15%throttle.   soon as i touch it it dies out.    i dont understand it.   its like its not pulling fuel into the the cylinder.   spark seems strong.  thinking about replacing plugs again but also think it will be awaste.

Did you rejet the carbs after you installed the Jardine and K&N?  If you have the jardine, why are you running with the restrictor ring?

no rejetting, acted fine for about 300 miles after exhaust install.  going down the road it cut off on me like it was out of fuel, added fuel and finally got it started, put restrictor ring in and ran for a week or two and then started acting like this.   im thinking about the dyno jet stage 1 kit, but will it help?

oh plugs look decent.  little discoloration, but nothing bad.  ill try to pull them tomorrow.  im also gonna try to get a video of what its doing, but right now its acting fine.

Check out the wiki, you'll see all the setups that people have used for AirFilter/Jetting/Exhaust.  I've never heard of anyone running an aftermarket exhaust without rejetting.  I'm guessing your bike is running extremely lean.

I wouldn't recommend the dynojet, they require you to drill the carbs, and lots of people have had trouble trying to tune them.  Get the jet kit from Buddha and take off the restrictor ring

put the stock air filter in it.   ran ok the other day and seems to be running ok today.  havent driven it but didnt need to before for it to act up.   waiting on reply from buddha and then ill have to order new carb bowl gaskets so looks like no riding for a bit

ok so i have now rejetted the carbs.   i currently am running the jardine full exhaust and stock air filter, with 132.5 jet set.    still isnt running right. i have tried the mix screw from 1 1/2 turns-3 1/2 turns.   it always seemed to run the same.   im truely lost at this point.    any ideas?

If I remember correctly, that jet set up of 132.5 is for use with K&N drop in and full aftermarket exhaust... So I would say switch your air filter back to the drop in...  Can't say that will fix your problem, but it would certainly narrow the variables.

according to THE BUDDHA, the 132.5s r for stock filter n full exhaust.  135 would drop in and exhaust.

Seems to me like that set up would be rich with the stock filter, but who am I to judge?

Have you checked the fuel level in the bowls?  Use a clear tube attached to the drain bent up into a U shape.  The fuel level in the tube should go up to the float bowl gasket; no higher, and no lower.  If it's not that level, adjust your float height with the tab on the floats.  If that doesn't work, then replace your needle valve sets.

You might also be having issues with your petcock.  If it runs better with the bike on prime (once you get the float heights correct), then replace your petcock and vacuum lines as well.

raivis

have tried turning the petcock settings, doesnt change anything.     the idle seems ok, but as soon as i give it gas, it may rev 2k more but thats it then it boggs down to the point of cutting off if i try to hold it.  same thing with the choke.   also noticed that if i rev it slow,  it will go up about 2k and if i try to rev it again right away, it wont go as much.     could float heights be effected if the bike fell over?

They might be?  I'm not sure.  More likely it's just wear.   I've taken apart 3 sets of carbs from older GS's including my own.  The needle valves were not in very good shape on all three.  They might stick, not allowing enough fuel to flow, or allowing too much fuel in the bowl.

I'm no expert, but I would check the float heights.  Also, did u balance the carbs after the rejetting?

are you referring to syncronizing the carbs?   i read you didnt have to sync them unless seperating the carbs.  ill check the fuel levels tommorrow at work.   gotta find some clear hose that will fit
