Lol @ the mirror. . .

Yeah, its coolz... he has like 3-4 different bike keys on one key ring... and they are all to running bikes...  :icon_lol:

All GS500's, too. The TS-185 key is too tiny for a standard key ring is it is not on there.
Buying another one today for $1200. Another 1992.

Forgot to mention: replaced sun bleached left hand controls for a better one that has the "Passing Switch". It only flashes the high light. This weekend I will move its wire so it always turns on both headlights. It would be cool to wire the lights to the horn button. Then when you hit the horn, the lights also flash for added emphasis. Heck, with the fairing I now have a place to hide an air horn.

Just buttoned up the bike after installing a new front sprocket and chain. (thanks Adidas for getting the lugs to me quickly) Id post pics but it's not too pretty right now.

Is there a good way to clean the Vaseline stuff of the chain or should I just leave it on there for now?

adidasguy

That's grease: leave it.
At most, wipe the chain with a rag. DO NOT CLEAN IT as that is good chain grease.

Even ugly pictures are appreciated. Consider it "bike porn".

Ooookay. . .  It's a gold chain but right it looks so dull because of the grease it was dipped in.

Also, I don't see what everybody's aversion to clip links are. I purchased an additional rivet link to put on my bike because of all the horror stories from using clip links but I put the clip link on and trust me that thing is on there. It took quite a bit of force to get the side plate pressed on and then the locking clip was a beast as well. I don't think I could take that thing apart if I wanted to at this point never mind it randomly failing and falling off.

Clip links: happens once and it is a horror story everywhere. Same thing happens with petcocks: once in a while they do go bad like any part so when it happens some people make it into a world wide catastrophic failure. Fork seals go bad far more often and no one complains.

That's the theory of ONE. You can understand one incident: one person dieing of H1N1 or West Nile. makes all the headlines. We ignore 30,000 that die of regular flu each year because your brain can not comprehend 30,000 people. You block it out - can't compute. ONE you can understand and have empathy with. More people die each year with they TV falling on them than from shark attack. Which do you hear about?

As for the chain, sure you can wipe it down to look purdy like and sparkly. I would not use any cleaners yet because that stuff is good, fresh chain grease from the factory.

Would the low beam not already be on on your bike?
That would be pretty cool to hook the lights to the horn.
I plan to pick up an air horn at some point as well.

Low on: PASS turns on HIGH
HIGH on: PASS does nothing as high is already on.
If riding with high, it would be nice for the PASS to turn on the low. Basically, take the 2 contacts of the PASS button and connect them to both sides of the high/low switch. Then PASS will short together the high and low beam lights.
Connecting to the horn would require 2 diodes so the lights do not turn on the horn.

Cleaned the Clutch cover. It was nasty...
Cleaned the rims.
Valve synced, Carbs synced and floaters adjusted.
Using an angle grinder I removed the old bar-ends. (The screw sockets were demolished)
And today I ordered new bar-ends and a small analog clock as it kills me, not to know what time it is when driving to and from work.

Well, I jetted the carb on Tues but havent dialed it in yet. Im 2 turns out and it started and revs fine. Plugs look good.

I detailed the entire bike today, cleaned and oiled the chain, took those after market bar ends off, blasted my OEM bar ends with Black Diamond and then glass beads, then powder coated them gloss black and installed them.

Why would you want the Pass to turn on the Low if already riding on highbeam? If you are close enough to a car to signal the pass you are too close for highbeam. Maybe I am missing something. :dunno_black:

I consider the PASS button an attention getting button. If I see someone ahead of me that is maybe looking like they are going to pull out, a flash may get their attention.

I suppose there was only room to print "PASS" where it should have printed "Press here to signal dufus cager to watch out for me because I see you and you don't see me yet".

Then on the other hand..... why not?

mister

You're already on highbeam, that's why not. The point being, if they are too close that you need to Flash them, then you are too close to still be on highbeam.

If you want to Signal someone, start swerving left/right in your lane. THAT will grab their attention more than a headlight flash which could be similar to hitting a bumb in the road and not noticed. But swerving in your own lane gets attention real quick.  :thumb:

Sorry - I sense a pissing match in the making.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Opinions duly noted.
Have a good day.

Oh dear. I've scared him off.

Addy, it was a legitimate question. See, in Australia we are to have our headlights dipped if less than 200 meters behind a car or for oncoming cars. If you can see a car in a side street within that distance you are to have your lights dipped. You would not stay on highbeam to then create even more light. With this frame of reference I asked for the purpose behind your desire as it did not make sense to me with our road rules. There is no "pissing match" about it. Oh well.

replaced the clutch lever.  spliced in the new front indicators that the local supplier still couldn't get right even though I gave them a spare plug to work from.  charged the battery.  just waiting to take it for a spin to refuel before tomorrows ride.  Sunshine Coast Hinterland ride, around 240kms of non highway black top goodness.

We usually drive with the high beam on so idiots on cell phones and texting can see us. A flash of light might get their eyes away from their phone, kid, dog, food, makeup or nap.
We have some law on high lights but only cars follow it. Most bike headlights are so mis-aimed that.... well...... you get the idea.

ThatOtherGuy

see my other posts about replacing the high beam warning light with T5 LEDs.  a result of realising I had been driving around with high beam on for probably a month before knowing because the warning light was not functioning. :technical:

amazed I was not pinged for it, but then it would have been steady and constant not flashing/dipping.  in Aus, if you get caught flashing/dipping they will ping you, mostly because they caught you, which means they were there and they assume you were warning other drivers about their presence.

I like the idea, but it could cause more headaches for the legality.  often when I am beeping someone, its for a side intrusion not from the front.  for me, side = horn, front = flash light as horn is often useless.  YMMV.
