Hey Yama (and of course anyone else who knows about watches),

My wife's watch stopped working. I assumed it was a dead battery, but when I went to replace it I noticed that the hands don't move when I turn the crown.   Is this an easy fix? How to I remove the crown to take out the movement (do I even need to do this)?

Thanks!

codajastal

Dont bother fixing it. Its a cheap Japan Movement and is worth nothing.
Cheaper to replace. (you need a glass too)

dee the dimple encircled in red. that usually is the one you depress, something coming to a fine pt can do this. anyhoo with stem all the way in, depress this dimple and try to remove stem GENTLY if it doesnt remove, try pulling stem out to set time then repeating dimple thing. the other circle ive seen releases there too. but id try the red one first
this will get movent to fall out if not careful. but youll have to swap the hands and face onto the new movt. appears to be a miyota, i MAY have one ill check.

agreed with cods here unfortunately. cost of miyota movts arent expensive but cost compared to a new or gently used watch is similar

Thanks for the quick replies! I was hoping you'd say it was a simple matter of lubricating a gear, or something like that. Given that the movement appears shot, I agree with you both that a new watch makes more sense.

well you wont be able to get to the gears without taking the movt completely apart. time you get the tools to do so, and supplies. youve bought the watch 3 times. and this is quoted using the chinese tooling. which is ok. i bought second hand swiss tooling. hold on to that watch. ill see if i have the movt. if so, ill send the stem to it @ my cost. in an envelope. i seem to recall having one on hand. but am not sure. will check tomorrow @ shop.

Yup, I had pulled it out to second position and nothing. Actually, I found that the watch hands will move with the crown pushed in if you apply "sideways" pressure in just the right way. Trouble is the hands stop again a few minutes later. Obviously, the behaviour is not normal, so I still agree that the movement/watch is done for.

It's very kind of you to offer, but no need to worry about spare parts. This particular watch doesn't even have sentimental value, so it's not worth the trouble for you to look.

what you just described is par for movement death. ( or stem damage as well)

Without any shame of my blatant threadjacking... I have a Victorinox Startech 3000. How much would it cost to have a new crystal, band, and batteries installed. It was a great watch that suffered Iraq and was run over by a HMMWV causing a big gouge in the crystal. I've since broken the band and the batteries have died. Send me a good price and I'll send you some work :thumb:Thanks in advance
Friendly fire, isn't. But it's the most accurate. Semper Fi

have pics of the battlewatch?, tbh not familiar with the model. but have a few vic. parts pieces in my horde. including crystals.
