hi guys just had a chat to with the boys at my local shop and they said the restrictions on a gs500 is in the ecu so i look up online to find an after-market ecu bout had no luck any one know were i can get one? or will i have to get my stock one tuned up

There is no ECU per se on the GS500. There is an ignition control module (cdi), but only advances timing. I'm pretty sure the restriction is either an insert in the carb throat or a block on the CV slide.

hrrrmmm ... could be just hearsay .. but i've always been told that there are no real restrictions/restrictors in the GS500 .. it is designed to be this power ... it is what it is!! .. sure you can change the jets/filter/exhaust etc and get some power gain .. but .. not gonna ever turn it into a street monster without more $ input than you bought the bike for!

it is a great entry level platform for so many riders... and even more riders that are after a good commuter or easy riding bike.

you want horizon blurring acceleration and performance ... then an injected litre bike or some other crotch missile is what you need

you just want more speed and handling from your GS500 .. invest in some advanced rider training and/or track days so you actually make use of all the bike has to offer  :thumb:

not hacking on anyones ability level .. this is a more general 'riders at large' statement.

--extra note-- .. i will probably upgrade at some point to a Street Triple R .. cos its my fav looking bike in that engine size range .. it will have more power ... i know the GS500 will never have the same power .. but i'm still happy to use what it does have with reasonable effect.. personally i wont own a litrebike .. i simply dont need that kind of performance ... each to their own as always!

LAMS may not require restriction on the GS. But I believe England limits new riders to 33hp. (or is it Kw?)

Adidasguy posted a picture once I found interesting, there were restrictor plates that I believe fit on the intake to the engine and had holes that wouldn't allow the full gas/air mixture in.

Maybe it was a dream.  :dunno_white:

Not a dream. For real. That's the only restrictor. It goes between the carb intake boots and the engine head to cut down air by about half.

The ignition control unit does not restrict anything. Old ones just make a spark. Newer models adjust timing a little for emissions (hence throttle position sensor, wiring for 1st and 2nd gears, etc.)

any one have any info for taking the restrictor plates out? all i see in the pick is the handlebars?

i rely want the power so the throttle is a little bit more responsive so i can practice for when i get a bigger bike. Im getting fairly quick and low around corners now, and i can pritty much full throttle it out of corners with out the bike sliding out so the throttle response is well shaZam! to be honest.

What is partially covering the word "Cycle" on the magazine?
There are 2 of the restrictors next to the 2 fork caps on the magazine.

They go on the carb intake boots. You remove the carbs then the intake boots.
Though I do not know if you have the same. These are the only ones I am aware of.

oh my bad i just didnt think they were it they look like gaskits to me sorry. so if i took these out will i need to put new ones back in at a larger size or can i just take them out and put everything back together again. also what model bike did it come out of, mines a 2010

adidasguy

If you have them there, you would simply remove them. If they are there, you would see them partially blocking the intakes when you look into the intakes with the carbs removed.

When removing the intake manifolds, you should replace the o-rings on them. You do not want an air leak.

Remember: I do not know if you have these or something else. I received these for my collection of GS500 parts from a member in Europe who said these were used in communist countries to limit horsepower. We do not use restrictors or require them in the USA.

gs500asf

so these are the only form of stock restriction on the gs500? i know i have the restrictions on it there is a scheme in Australia were you have to ride a bike with a power to weight ratio of a 250cc bike so the gs500 would fall under this. my restricted bike barley makes it to 190km but its a 500cc so it should be able to go faster shouldnt it?

adidasguy

It is the only restrictor that I am aware of. Probably your fellow Ausie's will know if a different one is used. I can't think of anything else that would do the job of restricting the HP that can simply be added or removed unless the carbs are altered.
