Hey all,

I moved to the coast a little while back and now i'm starting to notice some rust on certain parts of the bike. Is there anything i can treat it with to rustproof it? the salt air out here is merciless  :icon_question:

What parts do you want to rustproof?

If they get hot - gas grill paint has worked well on many of our exhausts.

If they don't get hot - use your leftover gas grill paint. Still good paint. Also, Rustoleum make an aerosol "rust reformer" paint. "turns rust into a protected, paintable surface" or something. Like primer, but you can use it over light surface rust after just wire brushing off the chunks. Then you will want to paint over that primer with whatever color paint you want.

Not sure how much experience you have with painting, but GO SLOW. Only apply a little paint at a time. Let it dry thoroughly, and apply many thin layers. Your time will be 1% painting, 9% prepping and taping, 90% waiting for paint to dry.

I treat the not so rustproof parts on my bike with Lanolin based spray - "Lanolite" - it seems to work well here in our wonderful rainy marine environment... bit of a trick to clean it off, but it never really dries out and seems to disolve with normal parts cleaner (washing it with soap won't take it off)

Hope this helps

That reminds me - [new] motor oil does the same type of thing. Wipe it on with a rag, and water will bead right off for awhile. Come off with most mild solvents though. Could be a good or bad thing...

I too use a Lanolin spray on my exposed metal bits. Eg. Rust color started to appear on my sidestand, a few squirts with lanolin and it is no longer rusting  :thumb: Doubple plus is, it is sticky :thumb: :thumb:
