Hey guys, long time reader first time posted...

I just got my bike serviced from the mechanic and I was cleaning it yesterday noticed there was oil all over the front of the "Engine Oil filter" according to the manual (excuse my ignorance I am not very mechanically minded). I called my mecahnic and he told me to wipe it off and see if it happens again, Should I be worried?

  • Wipe oil off filter cover
  • Check oil and fill back to full
if that is resolved then don't worry, If not and is still leaking..

Attempt to do an oil change yourself and take the oil filter cover off make sure the gasket is properly on and lubed and re tighten it back on. The gasket might not have been on the cover enough to seal it or the nuts were not properly tightened.

Remember not to tighten those nuts up too much because they do break easily

also.... If its still on warrenty- do what he said and bring it back asap to have it fixed. It should be an easy fix but don't do anything that he didn't say on warrenty. my 2-cents

Clean it off really good then wait and see.
Oil from there would normally leak from around the sides of the cover.
Possible:
1. O-ring slipped out of place when mechanic put cover on
2. Mechanic forgot to tighten the top nut so oil leaks from there and down the front

Unless you can fix it yourself (you sound new to bikes so my guess is a "no") take it back and have the mechanic put the oil filter cover on correctly. The mechanic changed the oil so he should have correctly installed the oil cover.

If you fiddle with it then you void the warranty on his work (unless he tells you do do something first).

Could  just be oil from his greasy hands. Then, a mechanic should clean off the gunk after doing the work.

He told me that he cleaned it when he was finished, So I think this oil leak happened after the service, Should I just wait and see if it leaks again? the engine oil is still at the full mark... so engine oil is fine, I assume its safe to ride.

Ride.
Watch for a leak.
Note how much it leaks: is it dribbling or marking its territory?
Still, I would bet the dealer didn't tighten down something or the gasket is out of place. Nothing you can do to make it leak - especially right after they serviced it.

Clean everything.
There could be a leak from the back - like the cam chain tensioner. Did they do valves? Could be a leak on the valve cover.

There IS a small passage from the back to the front of the engine between the cylinders. I suppose that's so water doesn't collect on the back of the engine. If there is a leak on the back, it can run down and through that passage then show up at the front of the engine.

So clean everything spotless. Dry it (run for 2 minutes to warm up and dry off). Dust everywhere with baby powder. Now ride and run it. Watch where the oil is coming from. Very obvious in the baby powder.

Then you can report back to the dealer and finally determine if they did it (which is my guess: problem after servicing = something done when servicing)

This is the oil leak after returning from work today. Yesterday I cleaned it so it was all shiny and today there is more oil splatters.

Down the bottom highlighted in red was completely black yesterday, the rest was fine.

Ok dude.... the bike is still under warranty. Do nothing yourself, ok? Take it back to the mechanic immediately for him to rectify at his expense - yes you are put out but he stuffed up it should be He that fixes it not you (and possible cause more harm).

Judging by the splatter marks on the header pipes and front bolt boss it looks like your "oil leak" has come from the road surface, not the engine. The bolt boss mark that you high lighted is WAY above the oil filter cover so it cannot be from there. Road splatter is common on the front of the engine as the front mudguard (fender) is so short on the GS. I am forever cleaning all sorts of sticky goo off the front of the engine. That reminds me, I must get a "fender extender" to stop the mess.

I called my mecahnic and he told me to wipe it off and see if it happens again,

Seems fair advice to me, its all he is going to do if you take it back and on the face of it he isn't disputing what you say nor is he refusing to put things right if it turns out his work is at fault.

If it does start weeping again just go back to him. At this stage I cant see the need or the point in doing anything else   :dunno_black:

I may not be the nicest guy around but if I were in this situation; I'd leave early in the am and go to the dealer. Show him that I wiped it before I left and ask him to look into fixing the leak.

Its a super easy fix and it really isn't a big issue now.
