Hello gentlemen.

After dissecting my gs500's engine, I have found a broken piston rod bearing and a badly scored crankshaft. Rather than spend the money to repair it, I think it would be wiser for me to purchase a used engine instead.

Ebay lists plenty, but for too much. Anyone within 200 miles of rhode island willing to sell a gs500 engine to me for under $500? Willing to pick up myself. Even better if someone outside of the 200 mile radius is willing to ship a gs500 engine.

When I was looking I couldn't find anything reasonable and went tardfarm.  Mine was in the exact same shape yours is in.  Adidas scored one not too long ago off ebay for cheap, so they do pop up every now and then.  Good luck to you!

Yeah I bought mine too in the same condition, broken rod, spun bearing and bad crank. Nathan found me a complete bike that I bought, had shipped to me, kept the engine and sold everything else

That's what I plan on doing myself. However, haven't been able to find a good deal yet. Guess the crank rod is a common issue, eh?

'Common' per se ... but you have to take into account that a majority of people that find their way here are looking for help with their GS before they spend money at the dealer... so problems are inherently more prevalent here than in the world of GS's.  (...Not to imply that there is anything wrong with this!  Its why the forum is so comprehensive on anything GS!)

That being said, the GS engine doesn't handle low oil conditions well (what engine would?); and you are likely to suffer 'catastrophic failures' such as these when that occurs. Don't get me wrong, that's not the only way for these to occur, just the more 'common' way.   ;)
