Bike runs really well the only problem with it is that when I ride my bike hard it idles funny. When I put into neutral at a light or pull the clutch in the RPM's wont drop below 3k unless I slowly let out the clutch without throttle to put "drag" I guess on the engine and force it down past 3k then it will balance out at 2k.

Im not to concerned with that but was thinking it might pertain to something I found on the motorcycle while washing it that looks broken or wrong. Clicking these pictures will enlarge them.

Looks like the hose has been cut, not sure what that thing is but it looks like it attaches to the carb. The other side is missing this thing or maybe theres only supposed to be one.

This looks like how my carb connects to my engine maybe, the other side of my bike has same connection but it has a bolt tightening it could that be causing issues?

Any help identifying these parts would be really cool. Nothing is really wrong with the bike, I just bought it last month and it is my first bike but I have already put on 3k miles. Really enjoy riding and looking to learn more about my bike. Kind of inexperienced when it comes to working on vehicles if you couldn't tell so no crazy technical terms please (unless you tell me what they mean)

First picture: You have a broken vacuum operated switch. The hoses have brown plastic which are the connections that broke off of the part. Appears to be some brown goop that someone used before in an attempt to glue the parts back together.

2nd Picture: Yes, you are missing the screw on the clamp. That is not causing the idle problem, but can cause the carbs to fall off if the other side loses its screw.

LOTS of greasy goop there. You need to find out where it is coming from. Most likely a leaking valve cover gasket. Not serious - just makes a mess if that what it is.

Well I went crazy and took off my gas tank and my throttle body (not sure if thats what it is) alot of the leaking seems to be coming from the connection missing the screw and some is coming from what you suggested. At least I think its the valve cover gasket, that would be the last picture I took (really bad angle sorry) basically the top of my engine. Most importantly I wiped everything down with Simple Green and Throttle Body Cleaner.

Now to the vacuum operated switch, is that important? It seems to connect everything together with these little hoses and as of right now  I took that switch off the bike. Do I need to replace this? What does it do? Where can I find one?

Pictures:

Honestly was very surprised how simple taking all that apart was. Really increased my confidence level when it comes to the mechanics of my bike, dont think I really learned anything but was cool to see how it goes together. Overall I took apart in like 2 hours with my girlfriend being tool fetcher (not the best one but she was glad to help) and only thirty minutes to put back together. I did leave off my side fairings for now though.

vacuum leak and loose clamp can both cause high idle, basically anything that lets air into the engine after the carbs is going to raise the idle and cause problems.

Fix everything you can and get new screws.

Where would I find that specific screw? I was going to take a look where we have some screws at my work tomorrow but its definetely not a machine shop just a gangbox with assorted screws.

you can grab a temp one from lowes and order a authentic one from bike bandit.

This is what you need:

Gosh, this parts whore has no idea where there would be one just laying around on a kitchen counter.......
Probably have a few of the carb clamp screws, too....

You should get a new valve cover gasket. Not expensive and easy to replace. Maybe your valve cover is not screwed on tight?

Temp or authentic: doesn't make any difference but it IS METRIC!

(We do have a few parts whores on this board.......)

So I did find a screw at my work, perfect too. Its a stainless steel screw with a allen head. Replaced the other screw with another one to make them match. Any idea where I can purchase that vacuum thing? Will that fix my idling problem? It only does it when the engine gets really hot. I am fairly certain it doesnt have anything to do with the idle screw as I can pull the rpms down by letting out clutch then pull clutch back in and the rpms stay at 1.5k.

Also what kind of rpms do you guys cruise around at? When I first got bike I tried to keep it typically between 2-5 but that seemed to bog alot so lately I have been staying between 4-7.

Dude.  Where do you think Adidasguy got the picture of the vacuum thing on a kitchen counter?  Hit him up, get a price, send money.

My bike seems to enjoy 5-6k. If I'm cruising through a neighborhood, I'll drop it down some, as the V&H exhaust is a bit noisy.

Steady cruise around town at just under 4K.  Drop a gear quick if I need to get a move on for anything.

My bike:

Again click to enlarge. Just put in a HID light too.

Also just went and bought a new chain as I really f%&ked up the one that came on my bike when i bought it. I bought a gold x ring chain but it was like eight links too long. Is that normal or did they just sell me one too long for my bike. I had to take off the links to make it fit right.

Until you have a certain number of postings, you are considered a spammer and have to jump through hoops.

Surprised no one said I was a "parts whore" and the one I showed was just one of my spare parts. I thought I implied that - I do have every part for a GS500. (Its just some are reserved for a bike build this winter).

yes - I can send it to you for $10. email me at    adidasguy  at   gs500club.com    and arrange to paypal me $10 and I can mail it out to you.

(yes - I do own the domain gs500club ! )
