Bikeless and Broke at the moment...

Flabergasted

Im looking to buy my first motorcycle and I've found two that I am debating right now.

Here's the first

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/mcy/3294620163.html
2001 GS500E
18,000 miles
all stock, I think
$2000
$1500 according to KBB

and duece

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/3287787499.html
2008 GS500f
11,000 miles
yoshimura exhaust? ($300?)
He said he will go to $2800
$2750 on KBB

A mechanic told me they aren't much different, just cosmetic stuff.

Im in a dilemma,
I like the price of the 01' since I have about $3500 to spend in all
but being much newer, more attractive, and closer to the blue book value, the 08' keeps me making a decision.

Also, I will be arranging to see the bikes and paperwork soon to make sure everything checks out.

If anybody has input, as an experienced or educated rider I would appreciate it much.

I like that 2001 if it's as good as it looks... even better if you can knock down the price a little. Point out imperfections and then see if the seller is willing to go lower. I tried really hard to get a GS500 around my area, but had no luck. Then I widened my bike wish list (Ninjas, Rebels, SV650, etc) and picked up a 06 Honda Hornet. Good luck!

One consideration is 2001-2002 are the "bastard" years. That is, sort of 89-00 and looks like 2004+

Some parts are hard to find like replacement CDI's, carbs, and hand controls have different connectors.

2004+ are all compatible for parts except for the right hand control: in 2006 they changed the connector and ran the headlight through it to turn off headlight when starter pressed.

In the USA, a 2004+ naked has had the fairings removed. Naked 2004+ were not sold in the USA. 2001-2002 were always naked.

I would go 2004+ if only for parts compatibility and availability.

Ask the 2008 seller what happened to the fairing. Look for signs of damage. Fairings often removed after they are crashed.

The 2001 does look really nice. Slightly lower on price and it would be a steal.

Worst case? If you ever had to do wiring work, you could rewire it totally to 2004+ parts for probably $200. That might only be if you had to replace the CDI and that cost you well over $100. Then I'd change it out. Half a day job. I got a complete 2006 wiring system including CDI and everything for $115!

This bike is pretty modified. Rear tail and sub frame are SV650, exhaust can is GSXR600, Custom front flyscreen and lighting. Bike is pretty cool looking and fun to ride. It needs some love though. The tank leaks a little. The rectifier/regulator is bad so the charging system is not working. It will need a battery too. It runs but smokes a little. Good winter project.

Fix it and flip it?

It's an interesting combo, for certain.  The sv650 seat cowl is worth a pretty penny by itself, depending on the color.

Considering it needs tires, fairings and a windshield, yeah.

And maybe he knew someone who made the trade?  Harleys aren't exactly renowned for their comfort..  Maybe it's just salesmanship?  At least he's being upfront (as far as we know) about the issues the bike has.

But then maybe I've just seen so many terrible ads, I'm willing to give some one a little more slack if they actually provide information regarding the bike..

I guess I know the likelyhood of it being a JMU student that ran the piss out of it and then ran out of money. Makes me a little skeptical, but you're right, at least some info is given. Might have to check it out.

What's with the exhaust on that 650? ... maybe just the angle, but looks like just the pipe there.

The 650 ninja's exhaust ends just under the engine. Not go through to the back side.
