HID in GS500

How is the idea of intsalling HIDs in GS500E? I have heard that HIDs generate a lot of heat and can melt the stuff inside the housing. Is the GS light housing good enough to put HIDs in there?

Run a search for HID in this forum.

Plenty of people have done this mod.  :thumb:

I'm just going to say I severely recommend against it. A proper retrofit can look good and supply a much improved amount of light without blinding oncoming traffic, but understand that no HID conversion is DOT approved. Also, I have nothing nice to say about people who put HID kits in the stock reflective housings.

+1 to RossLH's statement.

Unless you get it properly done and aim it correctly, you'll just be another one of those guys on the road whose headlights completely blind oncoming traffic.

^^ Correct as HID projectors have cutoff shields inside them to cutoff the height of the light on the right side for on coming traffic. But if you use a HID projector then its totally cool and fine. I do a lot of retrofits

Keep in mind blinding oncoming traffic across a median is annoying, but even in broad daylight an overly bright headlight can seriously mess with someone's depth perception, thus severely compromising your own safety. So not only is it extremely annoying, its just not smart.

weedahoe is correct. I do like the look of a good retrofit, but remember no matter how good the retrofit is it will not be DOT approved.

I'm on the other side of the fence.  I HIGHLY recommend it.  Be sure you get a kit that includes a cut off shield, and get her aligned, and you won't be blinding anyone.  The stock lighting sucks the big one for night riding.  HID's are a BIG improvement.

Also make sure you install a timed relay - this will start up the hid after a preset time that starts when you turn the ignition on.  This way you don't burn out the bulb from when the headlight cuts out when you start your bike.

There is no kit that's going to have a proper cutoff in a glass headlight that comes on the E. The first step would be to source an SV light or simply the lense and go from there...

That's a bit incorrect. There are many HID kits available on the market that come with hid projectors, ballast, harness and bulbs. I deal with a lot of them.

The projector housing itself would have the cutoff shield.  The challenge will be trying to find a projector that would fit in the stock E housing.  It has been done on other bikes though, for example:

Thats the same kit i used.  And for anyone considering this - you don't need the relay harness if you plan on using a fuse block like I did.  If anyone needs a relay harness, I have one sitting here unused from the same company as weedahoe linked.

I think his point is that the cut off is not going to be compatible with the faceted lens on the E headlight.

What makes you think it can't be done? I don't have an E headlight so is it a sealed beam headlight? If not, it can be taken apart.

Sure you can stuff it in there. But that sweet cut off? Gone.

If you could fit a shallow projector in there, why wold it be gone? Even if you needed to mount a projector in it and let the back of the projector hang out the back and cover it with a cap, it would work.

But Ive never seen an E headlight so  :dunno_black:
