So the bike Im on now is an 07 I bought from a member here some time back that had a bad engine due to a spun bearing and a thrown rod. When I bought it I check the oil for the level of the fluid and any metal in it and both were fine

I replaced that engine and all is good but.............

I bought another 07 today with another bad engine. Yep, you guessed it, a rod spun bearing. Oddly enough, the oil level is fine.

Coincidence?

On a side note, Ive already got another engine to go in it but Ill still take pics as I go through it

A lot of times people will top the oil off after the horrible noises, in hopes that it will get better. Doesn't often work out.

8k on the clock I think. I would have to look again.

I tried to start it and got nothing but a click from the starter relay. The battery is good so I figured the engine was locked up. After breaking the top of the engine down last night it was confirmed. The left rod seized to the crank and broke loose from the piston leaving it in the cylinder. I haven't gotten to the bottom half yet.

Yeah, I knew the engine was bad from the start.

I can tell you one thing thats a fact though. After buying two bikes with bad engines and both due to low/no oil, Im constantly checking mine all the time LOL

+1
I bought 4 bikes(2 ninja 250, 2 gs500) with  spun rod bearing bikes last summer when I was on a buying spree for fixer up bikes. The scary part was all 4 was within pretty close time frame and within 30 miles from me. For a while I kept thinking bottom end craps out on bike engine often and had me checking the oil level every stop. I am still paranoid and check the oil level on the bike every day before starting no matter how late I am.

btw anybody else keep checking CL every hour even though you don't have any more space in the garage. Finding the android app for CL definitely isn't helping my situation.

What's the "low oil" light good for then??
Can't there be a way to have it trigger earlier or something?

weedahoe

Digital oil pressure gauges are always the way to go IMO.

If it's one thing I know about idiot light oil pressure gauges, it takes little pressure for them not to come and seem "ok".

So the problem is by the time they do come on its usually too late. In full sunlight, you can't even see if the damn things are on or not. So if it's sunny out and your running down the road at 70mph and it comes on and you can't see it, guess what you get?

nothing on the wiki about that.
Any easily fittable, cheap, ones, for the gs500?

weedahoe

Nothing less than around $100 or so I guess. I would look at Dakota Digital or Nordskog gauges. You would need it and a sensor and possibly threaded adapters and screw it into the port on the bottom of the pass side of the engine cover

As an update, got the bottom half broken apart. Seems the rod cap bolt/nut came loose, separated and let there be play in the bearing cap. You can imagine the rest from there. I found the rod bolt and nut in the bottom of the pan with no damage to either.

That's crazy. I wonder if it was rebuilt previously.
I had something similar happen to the 9" rear on my old Bronco.
Rear end let loose and barely got me home, chunk was rolling around in the bottom of the housing.
I found one bolt half way out and two broken bearing caps.

I thought it strange also. I can tell you the shims in the buckets were OEMs so I doubt it was rebuilt. It only had 8k on it anyway.

New motor will be here Thurs
