R6 throttle tube install issue

I know others have installed the R6 throttle tube for a shorter throw, but I attempted it tonight and ran into a snag.  The part of the tube that interferes with the switch assembly to stop the tube from rotating past the zero point when the throttle is closed is not big enough.  It's very close, and it catches a little, but it's possible to rotate the tube forward past the point where it should stop.  Here's a couple pictures to illustrate.

Here's the tubes butted together with the cylinders lined up.  You can see that the OEM tube extends further out in the circled area.

Here you can see how the OEM tube interferes with the switch assembly to stop it.  This is the area where the R6 tube can slip past.

I know others have done this mod.  Did anyone run into the problem?  It's so close that it does catch sometimes.  I'm just not comfortable with it.  Are the 04+ switch assemblies different than the 89-00?  I have a '93.

Funderb

can you remedy by super-gluing in a bit of sheet metal or plastic? might be the cheapest and easiest fix to extend the interfering area a little bit.

I'm pretty sure the switch assemblies did change in design when the bike was restyled.  I know the housings look different from the outside.

I got motion pro part number 01-0094. One of the bikes it lists is the 2003-2005 R6.  Which one did you guys get?  Weed? Graham?

I'm don't remember from which thread I got the idea for which tube to buy.  I'm wondering where I went wrong.  I know graham has an older bike and weed has a newer one.

weedahoe

Same on I have. But I do know the controls are different as already said

Cool.  I can sell to someone with a newer GS then.  Need to confirm which part Graham got then.

Well crap.  You guys both got the same one I got.  I didn't realize that Graham had an 02.  It must be that the switch assembly is different.  Now I have to go on the hunt for a tube with a shorter throw that will work on the older switch assemblies.

Weed, does the SV throttle tube that you got extend out the same amount as the stock GS tube, or would I have the same issue with that one?

weedahoe

I'm not sure honestly. Can you sand it down a bit? I have nothing to compare it to being I threw the stock tube away and the R6 is installed.

You could always change controls. That's what I would do. You would have to cut the harness connector off the end of your controls and put them on the new controls but according to the electrical schematics, all the wires are the same color so it wouldn't be hard.

I *think* I have some controls out in the tool chest if you're interested

Sanding it down wouldn't help, it would just make the issue worse.  I actually need more plastic sticking out to stop it from rotating too far forward.  Would you mind doing some caliper measurements on the SV throttle tube that you have for sale?  I'll post a picture to illustrate the measurement that I need.

weedahoe

Sure, no problem. Just LMK what you need

I need this measurement...

The circumference of the tube where the cable sits would be nice too, just as a comparison of how the throw will be vs. stock.  It can be measured with a string.

bombsquad83

I saw that you have some nice pictures of the SV throttle tube 01-1045 from motion pro vs. stock.  I think it looks like that distance would be the same as stock, but I would want a measurement to confirm.

I can get a new one from here for $11.50 here: http://www.amazon.com/Motion-Pro-Throttle-Sleeves-01-1045/dp/B002304O70/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1353340332&sr=8-4&keywords=01-1045

Would you sell yours for $10 shipped if that measurement is good?

weedahoe

Youre requested measurement is right at 13.5mm

Is this the pics youre talking about of the SV650 versus stock tube? They are different as you can see. I paid $18 shipped for that tube. I would sell it for $12 shipped. Its going to cost me $1 for the box and another 2.50 to ship it

Hey Bomb,
I'd be interested in the R6 tube, as I have an '04.  PM me details and we can go from there.

That is the picture I was referring to.  You paid $6.50 too much for that tube!  I'll check the measurement when I get home today.  If its good I will take it off your hands for $12 because I hate to see parts go to waste.

Anyone with an '01 or newer need an R6 tube?  I can sell the one I got for $10 shipped.

Lol. You posted before I even got done asking!  PM will be sent.

weedahoe

Yeah, it's new. Had it on the bike maybe a week and maybe 2 rides on it. Bought it off ebay from a vendor.

Measurement on the stock tube was also 13.6 mm.  Measurement on the R6 tube is 11.4 mm, which explains why it doesn't work.  I will buy your SV tube Weed.
