Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm wondering if any 500e owners have tried either of these windscreens.  I'm wondering specifically how much wind-protection and noise reduction either yields.  If you've got another windscreen option that looks similar and works well, feel free to mention it as well.

This will give you a beginning overview:  http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Upgrades.Windshields

Use the search function to see if anyone has any thoughts.  Windscreen effectiveness will vary based on rider height, etc.

Thanks.  I had read that page which is how I chose those two models, but there aren't any specific comments about their effectiveness.  I also tried searching the message board, but again, no one yet seems to have described how well either work.

Ok, I'm sure someone will chime in here.  I have an 'F' model that has the stock windshield, so I am not much help.

I have (I believe) an F16 sport on my '93. I cant say much for wind noise reduction, as I wear earplugs that are designed specifically to mute wind noise, but the wind reduction is significant enough that I wouldn't ride without it. I'm 6'0" and lean slightly forward; the wind doesn't start to batter me around until about 75-80mph. Without it, the wind starts to get a bit violent around 50-55mph, so it really is a huge improvement if you do any highway riding.

That's very helpful, thanks.  I'm 5'10 and I have lower profile drag bars on my 96 500e so I imagine my experience would be similar.
How did you find installation? Pretty easy? Was the hardware fit pretty good?

I got this shield. It's made by Puig. I love it. It helps more than it looks like it does. I'm 5'10" and sit pretty upright really and it made a very noticeable difference. I didn't want some big shield that makes my cool ass bike look like my grandpa rides it so I wanted a small one, similar to a Ducati monster (but my bike cost $1500  :icon_lol:). I'm a skinny dude so like the guy above, 50-55 on a moderately windy day used to make me blow around some and this shield made that almost non-existent.
As for the install, suuuper easy. Hardware included and it mounts right on with no mod necessary.

Wow, thanks. I wasn't aware of that model.  You should post that picture on the wiki page, as it doesn't mention the Puig for naked bikes.

I had an MRA Highway Shield on my naked GS500 and it was perfect, particularly on the highway, I'm also 5'10" and it was just perfect to keep wind of me, rain of me and stop most bugs.  The MRA Highway is very similar to the Spitfire in size and dimensions.  Its now on the wife's Intruder as the GS500 is a commuter and my wife will get more benefit from it.  I recently took the GS500 out for a spin on the open highway and I forgot how much protection it offered, came back feeling absolutely blasted.

If I got another, I'd probably go lower like an MRA Road or Street Shield, which seems to be similar to the F-16 in profile.  Just something to protect the instruments and move most of the wind away from me.

Hope that helps.

Puig screen. Made a big difference. Well worth it.

Hey do you know what model PUIG that is?

I have a spitfire. Its a great windbreaker, but it mounts (2 points) VIA handlebar clamps, which is a terrible system, and is never perfectly straight. (which annoys me) I got rid of it when I got superbike handlebars because they are black, and the mount clamps definitely will destroy the powdercoat finish.

Do yourself a favor and get a shield that mounts to the headlight bracket and save yourself the stressful temptation to frisbee that goddamn thing across the parking lot because its flexed weird and kinda crooked.

f-16 is pretty sick looking and I think it mounts to the headlight, not the bars.

I never liked the 2 point mount of the Spitfire so I converted mine to a solid 4 point mount.  Had some extra Spitfire parts from the one that was shattered when my 97 GS was totaled in 03 and used them when I put a new Spitfire on my 02 GS:

The Spitfire was all I needed for summer use including 400-500 mile Interstate days at 75-80 mph indicated.  I still put a big Plexi 2 on for winters, hard to beat in Jan and Feb here in NE Ohio.  The big Plexi 2 is better in rain too but the Spitfire is much better on a windy day on the highway:

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.
