OK am I the highest here...
On the mailing list a few years back... 98-99 I wasn't, I ony had 24K or so then, There was Antonio (he's popped in here a few times as well) with 90+K, some others with 45K and some more people right around my mileage... Just curious... 37K of that 44 was driven by me BTW. 5 crashes, 2 insurance pay off's, 3 states of residence, 2 countries, 2 colors (89 white to 91 blue)... and still kicking.

wow...how do you guys keep the GS running for so long??

what are the maintainance i need to do to prolong engine life??
oil change...filter change...air filter change...

what else??

Oh yea forgot that. Atleast its not still climbing so I can actually shoot for that number... Well then again I might get passed by GSJack on his new ride... I have too little commute and too many bikes.

I'm not sure I qualify as a "long runner" -- my bike FINALLY turned 30,000 official miles last week.  But it's a '99, so that's not TOO shabby....

That's just about it.  Add in a periodic valve clearance check (and shim replacement if needed) and the engine is good to go ... and  go ... and go....

Oh, and don't forget the MUCH-more-frequent oil level check.  Changing the oil when it's dirty is one thing, but running OUT of oil is another thing altogether!  :nono:

106,000 kms - Last 8K by me. Many more to come, particularly after I upgrade the suspension.
'91 Model.
Still original engine - it's getting a little bit tired now though.
Some things are really really worn, like the gear selector is so well used it slips due to having ground down the teeth. I had to move the foot shifter out to the edge of the stud to give it some decent grip!
No pictures on the wall of fame - it looks a bit shabby (did when I bought it - but it's love...) and it's been dropped a couple of times.
When I get a couple of weeks off I might rebuild the engine, which I'm sure would give it a new lease on life.

Yea I cant compete with the europeans and the aussies man... You guys use bikes like... I dunno - everyday transportation. For the US market... these are strictly toys... while I dont use it like a toy... I use it for everyday commuting... I have a multitude of these things that all share the miles. Back in 95-96 I put on ~5000 in ~3 months was the only time the 89 GS was the only bike in my life. I dont think after that time its ever seen that many miles in a year - OK maybe when I was in canada 98-99 ... I have had more than 1 GS itself for most of the time I had the 89.

Yeah I use my bike to commute also, but the thing is, I only go about 4mi.  So it's not really going to make too much of a difference as opposed to strictly toy...

Mine was a 100 miles a day, now its down to barely 25. But the number is going down as well... from 10 bikes to ~4... maybe less. 4 miles... maybe try the long way to work one day, how do you even get the battery charged after just 4 miles. Also the oil temperature has to get high and stay high enough, long enough ~10 minute minimum ... to kill the acid build up in the motor. Might be advisable to ride the long way back everyday.

The commute is easy, at 70kms a day, but to do a decent ride each weekend I'm at ~300kms. Probably average out at ~600kms per week. More when I get motivated. Racks up pretty quickly over the months.
