With only 4 more sleeps before I get the mighty beast, I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on bike locks. I was looking into disc locks and they seem to be a good thing. Does anyone have a preference??

If thieves want your bike, they'll take it.  On another board, someone just got his CBR929RR stolen.  Had a disc lock/ w alarm, and a big, thick chain holding the bike down to an anchor embedded in the ground.  A couple other guys have had their garages broken into and their bikes snatched... one group of theives tore a hole in the garage door, disassembled the bike, and passed the pieces they wanted through the hole  :o

With a disc lock, thieves can still drive up in a pickup truck, 3 of them can lift the GS and toss it in the back.

But, a disc lock is a definite deterrent.  Thieves will look for an easier target than your bike.  If theft is a problem, might want to add a cutoff switch for the starter to keep a thief from bypassing the ignition, and chain your bike to a tree or some other immovable object :)

I'm kind of interested in a lock too. Currently I just put my U-lock from my bicycle on the front wheel of the GS500. But I was looking into Disc Locks, which one is a good brand/buy? Were is a good place to buy one online?

You COULD take a long extension cord, attach one end to the bike, wet down the ground under it and plug in the other end of the cord.  I bet that would keep 'em away.  :o   :o  :o  :o  :o

disk locks are good when you remeber them, I have a friend who has had it for both his bikes and to look at the scratches on both the bikes I wonder if having one is worth it because he forgets he has put it on and then tries to ride off, one moment bike is standing next to you the next on the ground with rider underneath.
Told him before get an ankle strap from a surf board attach to disk lock and to handle bars so you remember its on. But he keeps forgetting.
Moral of story is if you have a good memory and a strap there fine.
If Memory is a little flackey dont youll cause more damage to the bike to the point you hope someone does rip it off so insurance will get you a new one and  besides as its been said earlier if they want it they'll take it.
Also a question for everyone has anyone ever had there GS stolen as I dont really see it as a target bike (But I Had a mate who had his 250 Virago stolen, go figure why? :dunno:
But for me I would use a big f%$k off cable and kill switch hidden nicley

Agree with Jigger....park next to a Harley or Ducati or even better yet park between both of them.  And yes get a disc lock.  Ultimately if a guy wants your bike he'll get it.  And unless they actually know how to ride it they will carry it off with help from one or 2 friends.  A buddy of mine has a Duc with a very obnoxious decibel alarm which responds to significant movement of the bike.  It's located somewhere under the seat so it can't just be turned off in a second or 2.  It's actually worked for him a few times as far as scaring off potential thieves.  Good luck..!!   :nono:

My wife's '01 was stolen and recovered, taken to the shop for insurance estimates, home for a couple days and then stolen again. The second time it was not recovered and yes, the first guy was in jail when it was stolen again.

The first time it was stolen, from the damage to the bike, it look like he tipped it into the back of a truck or trailer and then took all the time he needed to remove any and all locks and drill out the ignition. He chose the GS over my Buell which was parked 2 feet away. He was caught riding it two weeks later with a screwdriver in the ignition, 9 grams of meth in his pocket and some stolen checks (somebody else's checks). He got 2 years probabation for the above and restitution payments to the victims. Less than two months later he got picked up again with another stolen vehicle.

The second time it was not recovered and the only thing left of the bike was half of the "tamper proof" ignition bolt that had been cut with bolt cutters.

About a month later, my Buell was stolen from the same spot and never recovered.

Are locks worth the effort? Absolutely. They argueably didn't have much of an effect on any of these three thefts and perhaps we should have used more locking mechanisms but they do serve their purpose as a deterent. Just don't forget that they are only that, a deterent and not an absolute or a guarantee. The idea being to make a potential thief have to spend as much time as possible before taking your bike.

I've heard one of the best things you can do is keep the bike covered when you aren't using it. I have a garage now, but that's what I used to do.

Some disc locks have long curly cords that attach to the throttle so you don't forget about it being there when you drive off.

Wrencher, I don't ever want to live close to where you're at.  What up with the theives over there, damn.

Anyways, with the disc lock I have a little bungie-like cord that attaches from the lock to the handle so I have never forgotten it.  Plus the cord acts like one more deterrent highlighting the disc lock in my opinion.

Well here in Memphis the chances of bike being stolen are pretty high and I am rather cautious. Maybe overly cautious so this is what I do.  First I have a HEAVY duty cable that I bought from Brinks. It has a D-Lock so there is no key to drill out.  I run it through the rim, frame and around an anchor in the ground, pole or anything immoveable. Also, instead of installing a secondary kill switch consider unplugging the spark plug wires.  Most theives are not very bright and in to big of a hurry to find a problem.  It worked on my dirt bikes and four wheelers. The cable lock i have is a little heavy and big but its worth toteing around in my back pack.  Disc Locks are nice as well. Just make sure you get one of upper end ones that have the harder metals and less zinc.

do you live in a house or apt? if you live in house keep it in garage if you have one. if you don't but have a walkway to your  front door, park right up to your front door.  you can put  concrete anchor along the walkway way just dig a deep put a metal anchor in it fill it wth concrete, you can make the anchor flush with the ground that way you can mow grass. withe anchor in place you can lock up your bike to it.  of if you have fence yard keep in inside you fence, get a good guard dog that will bark up a storm if anyone get close to yard.

Probably where I should keep mine more often when I'm not riding.

Hey Newbieone,

That is the best place but my bloody flat mate wont let me bring it in....And it looks alot better than some of the trolls he has bought home!

ABUS, American standard lock heavy duty ones with krpytonite chained down to something stationary. As good as those locks are they can figure some way to take your bike and yes keep it covered. But somewhere where strangers can't take a peek, my neighbor caught some dirt bag peeking underneath my bike cover so I moved it further in from the street after that, even though in Brooklyn it would be embarassing to get caught stealing a bike that wasn't an '04 or '03 and had RR at the end of its name. Stolen GS for sale is worth as much as a good mountain bike.  I used to leave my bike out in the street as there are several rice burner's on my block. With my new bike I just ordered that krytpo chain and american standard lock, and a new cover. Its a deterrent only. If they really want the bike, they're gonna figure a way to get it, so you might have to take a Buddhist perspective on things and not be so attached to your earthly belongings, lol.

Midtown in Memphis, TN.  I never asked if I could bring it in, I just drove the damn thing in. It was kinda of a pain, I had to keep picking up the back end to slide it over, but other than that made for a nice place to slap those bars on.  Now I wish my lady would let me tear the motor apart in there.  Also, this apartment is old and the carpet is crap so we didn't really care.  I don't imagine the lady will be allowing this at our new place, but it's in the safer town of Oxford, MS.
