Hey guys, my fork brace is bent. Just looking for one in decent shape, preferably with the 4 bolts to attach it to the forks as well. Budget isn't very big but I feel this should be a pretty dang cheap part! Please don't hesitate to PM me if you want to make a couple bucks and clear some space in the garage  :thumb:

Not at all. I just don't want to pay much for it. With the rainy season in Florida about 2 months from starting back up, time to put the fender back on!

although that one particular one on ebay dosen't come with the bolts that mount to the forks. You can find those at the hardware store though. try to get some bolts with allen heads.

Why specifically with allen heads? I mean I know it's stock equipment so is that why you guys suggest it so often? I'm big on nuts and bolts, allen heads annoy me

#7
Allens come in heads that are more visually appealing and essential less likely to strip IMO

Less likely to strip I believe you mean.

I've stripped damn near every phillips/JIS and even a few hex heads on my bike. Allen heads are much, much more resistant to stripping. You also have more leverage with an allen key for tightening and, more importantly, loosing bolts. And yea, they do look nicer.

Sorry but yes, LESS likely.

Thanks for catching that

Well I guess that makes sense lol. I've always been a fan of the chrome nuts and bolts. Never had good luck with allen heads, they always seem to strip on me, yet even on my somewhat rusty old F150 I have no issue getting the nuts off without rounding stuff.

Do the bolts you guys are talking about thread into the forks? Mine is held on my 2 nuts and bolt so I don't actually know how it is "supposed" to be

there should be 4 bolts that hold the fender on with nuts, and 4 bolts on the "corners" of the fork brace, which thread into the forks

Alright cool thank you! Removing the fender was an absolute pain! Although had I removed the wheel I bet it'd be really easy. My brace is bent just enough that the fender rubs the tire on the back right side... Not too keen on that, ya know?

Good god! you got the fender off without removing the wheel? That's insane. Probably could have removed the wheel and fender and put them back on 10 times in the amount of time it took you, if I had to hazard a guess  :icon_eek:

Front fenders are easy to get off with long socket extensions. Flexible ones help.

Then I took thick aluminum and made these that I stick under a fender so I can take them off and on real easy.
Drill 4 holes using the form brace as a template. Then stick it in the fender with double stick thick tape or gob of liquid nails or just tape it in there. It is best if the fork brace holes are slightly over sized so you have wiggle room to get the fender centered just right.

Now what to do with a pile of fork braces now that I use the thick ones on all my bikes.

gsatterw

That is brilliant adidasguy.

I'm diggin my thick fork brace

Thats a good idea to also brace from the under side as well.

It only took 5 minutes and a wrench lol. It was just some interesting angles to get my hand up there. I have Irish hardheadedness bred into me for 5 generations

I will, however, never do it again! My hand cramped twice, I lost the wrench up there once, I got rubber burn on my forearm from the tire, and burned my elbow on the exhaust pipe  :2guns:

So the wheel will come off next time! While I repaint them black and do the polished lip thing :)
