Here's some pictures, if they're not enough I can take more. Hopefully y'all see something I haven't noticed >_< Shrunk them down so they should be bandwidth friendly (~150kb per).

Turn signal

Turn signal

The turn signal doesn't let me get the rack piece to the bolt I think it needs to go to (left of it on that picture). I think on a normal/oem stalk-like signal, I could just bring the rack piece from under the light up.

Here's the paper with the instructions (and here's a link to the pdf).

Thanks for all the help!

You're installing the bracket by coming down from the top.
Go the other way. Come up from below. probably will fit OK.
Also note that your rear fender has been chopped off.
I would guess the turn signals are not in the original location. Are they where they belong? They look higher than normal.
A new fender is $40 so get a new one then cut it off if you want - but start with the turn signals where they should be.

Curious to see a picture from above of the turn signal with the tail plastic off.
Also how it fits when trying to bring the bracket up from below the turn signal.

Here you can see the space and note how much lower the turn signal is in relation to the tail light compared to your bike. That makes me think your turn signals were relocated when the tail was cut off.

I'll try going from under tomorrow morn', then. Can't recall if I've already tried...

Awch. I knew the PO had done a fenderoctomy, but didn't realize he might've moved the turn signals :technical:

I'll get those pics taken tomorrow. Will also see if I can  take one of the turn signals off easily (only held by two screws, from what I saw) so I can get a photo of where they're attached to.

Thanks.

Edit:
If I have to change the fender, will an F fender fit an E bike? They look similar/the same.

All rear fenders are the same. Remember: they're only like $40 NEW at your dealer and no shipping charges. You'll pay that much and postage for a used one. People don't realize that some parts are really inexpensive NEW while others are cheaper to buy used. You might find a used fender at a local bike breaker, but at $40 why bother with used?

Turn  signals fasten with one nut inside the fender, where the wires go through the bolt on the turn signal. If yours are fastened on with 2 screws - they are after market ones and in the wrong place. Your fender looks too short to still have the original mounting holes.

I've not been fond of extensive circumcision of the rear fender. I do remove the doo-dad thingies and mount the reflector and license plates flush to the fender for a cleaner look. Too wet here in Seattle - longer fender keeps things cleaner.

I almost went with that one until the 46 popped up on my local Craigslist.  Honestly, for just me and normal riding it is a little too much. But when my fiancĂ© and I both go riding, it gets a little full lol.

Got the SH40C, looked like the right size for me., SH42+ looked a bit too big, I hope I don't end up regretting the small-ish size :P

I picked up one from ebay the Shad SH-37 with the rack for "E" model but haven't done anything with it yet. I need another bike for it. Not right for Junior's sporty look and a rear case would ruin the look of Phenix.

Though I COULD check the fitting tonight. I do have Quin I can try it on or one of the extra frames. I still go with the turn signals being in the wrong place on your bike.

(This really should be a thread all its own on installing it)

Got a really good deal on a used set of aztec8 dual headlights. Installed those along with some bar end mirrors. I think it looks pretty good with my clip ons installed.

I can't take full credit for this idea, I found an old thread from steezin and wheezin that did a gs500 just like it.

FYI: They appear to the the Euro type-2 clip ons. They have quite an angle to the clips. 89's are short and stubby with the bar screws on the back side. They're still true GS500 clip-ons, just not 89's. This is just an FYI so people can remain aware of the 3 different types.

Looks like you dropped the front a little?

racinmason85

good to know. I remember that you mentioned something about them being euro type 2 bars when you sold them to me, just didn't know they were from a different year. I'll correct my previous post.

no its not lowered but I'm wondering if the front end is sagging a little bit. It really needs a spring upgrade badly, very mushy. probably do that this spring.

adidasguy

Maybe its the camera angle that makes the bars look higher than I am used to seeing them.

Front springs always need to be replaced. In fact, from October 1989 Motorcycle International Magazine:

"...the forks leave a bit to be desired - they are hopelessly undersprung and bottom out very easily when hard on the brakes or bouncing over potholes. At least half the fork travel is taken up just by sitting on the GS..."

They did give a good positive review to the GS500 except for the front springs.

I was just doing some research on here for sonic springs. I weigh 170lbs without gear so I'm thinking the .85 springs would be good. i checked their site and i believe thats what was recommended for me as well. I know my bike is definitely due for a front end upgrade. Its really the only part I hate about the gs, I still enjoy riding it just as much as my gsxr.

Same weight here and I use 0.85's. They are ideal.
I cane upon a few more sets of true 89's so if you ever want to try swapping the clips for 89's, let me know.
The Euro-Type-1's are the ones which are hard to find.

Rode it for the first time in 3 or do weeks today.

Looking good mang!! I really enjoy the look of the 5 3/4" duals. Yoshi slip on looks nice on your bike as well. Nearly a spittin' image of my setup(I even have the yoshi slip on, so we can be gstwin twins! haha), keep up the good work!

Seeing your bike is going to spur me to get a couple hours of wrenching on Gabby this week

Thanks! yep your previous bike build gave me the dual headlight idea. Made me love my gs even more. All I need now is for all this snow to disappear.

Put some rim stripes on it as by the tutorial posted in GSwiki.

Scrubbed away the surface rust from some replacement chain adjusters with aid of some hammerite gel.

Then watching the primer dry so I can paint them.
