Doesn't it have to be a 525 chain?  It says 520...no expert, but I'd check the compatibility of 520 and 525 chains.

The link I posted was to an extremely helpful guy I have dealt with a couple of times when experimenting with gear ratios for trials bikes but if you dont want to approach him Google for `custom motorcycle sprockets`

You get this amongst the top hits

http://www.rebelgears.com/products/sprocketimages.html

and on their webpage, right at the bottom it says.........

Any Tooth Size 18-76 in 25-35-40-415-420-428-520-525-530-630 More chain sizes than ANY other Sprocket manufacturer!

I cant vouch for them in any way but on the face of things it looks like they may be able to supply what it is you are looking for  :dunno_black:

Lin, I gave you the information that you need the first time you posted this question several months ago. The part number is JTF565.18 and it is readily available from Amazon for less than US$15 plus postage. I have now done 5oookm with the 18 tooth sprocket on. It has worked perfectly with the standard chain and I am still very happy with the feel of the bike. As it does not have the step on the spline hub needed for the later model bikes you can just use two aluminium sump plug washers with the correct inside diameter. These can easily be obtained from your nearest car repair workshop for just a dollar or two.

The link that you need for Amazon is below:

Thanks prmas, I was looking for that late last night recalling someone in Australia had used an 18T sprocket but my old eyes gave out before I found it.  That JTF565 sprocket is the type without the hub used on 89-93 GS500E models and comes in 12-18T sizes.

There is also a JTF512 sprocket that comes in 14-17T sizes that has a hub and was used by another gstwins member for anyone looking for a 17T front.

The JTF516.16 is the one listed by JT for 94 and later GS500/E/F models.

I used Sprocket Specialist 15T front sprockets without the hub on my 97 GS that came with a sprocket with a hub for over 40k miles without a problem.  No problem with the rear wheel properly aligned but I ran one on my 02 GS that was out of alignment and it became worn and wobly.  Wear was in the sprocket bore and the shaft spline was OK and still is many miles later.

I am now running an 18 tooth front sprocket and 37 tooth rear with the standard chain. The 18t front has only been on 2 days and I have covered 507km with it.  I like the feel of it as it has given the bike much longer legs. It was not a big step for me this time as I have been running 17/37 for about 12 months  but it is a lot different to standard gearing. At an indicated 100kph/62mph
I now show 4250 rpm. When new/standard it was 4900 at the same speed.  The part number is JT565.18  and I got it on Amazon. It does not  have the collar needed for the later bikes (mine is a K9) but I have just used two 26mm ID aluminium (aluminum to you guys)
sump plug washers and it works a treat. They have stock.   1It cost me $22 including freight to Melbourne, Australia.
end of cit...

well it fits - that is very very good.

and now i am trying to find out  where to buy this 18 t front sprocket..

btw; the rebelgear-friends do not have one;

QuoteHello Martin, Unfortunately a 18 tooth front sprocket is not available as a direct replacement for your 1999 Suzuki GS 500.  I've also had trouble finding a suitable substitute part (using the mentioned spacer method) If you are running a 17 tooth front, you can achieve the same gearing (18-37 : 2.06) by using a 35 tooth rear sprocket (17-35 : 2.06) Our part number is 474A-35 Price for a 35 tooth aluminum rear sprocket is $49.94 plus shipping (USPS flat rate priority international to Germany is $16.95) I hope we can help you in your quest for taller gearing. Thanks for your interest!
