Just received my luggage rack Suzuki makes for the 01-02 models.  Since the question has come up a couple times here, I tried it on my 97 GS first before putting it on my 02.  No problem mounting to the 2 bolts that hold the grab handle and it looks OK.  It is designed to look best with the redesigned rear end bodywork on the 01-02 models so that must be why they specify those years only.  Functionally it should work with any year GS500.

My homemade rack is back on the 97 it was originally made for.

Hey Jack, I've got one of those racks and I like it!

I've got several models/sizes of bags that I can velcro on.

I bought the Suzuki rack to mount the 33 liter Givi top case that should arrive later today.   :thumb:   My homemade rack has worked great for the past 3 or 4 years holding various pieces of soft luggage.  The tubular steel Suzuki rack is much more rigid than my somewhat flexible homemade rack.  Besides, I wanted a rack on my 97 too.

Do you want to sell or part with your homemade rack?
I'm really needing one to mount a topbox for my daily commute...

Homemade rack's, easy to make with aluminum pipe and that grab bar... just weld them up. Any shape and configuration you want. Heck it can extend back into the seat if you want.
Cool.

I don't have a welder or pipe or the time and patience to do it... might as well take advantage of another person's ingenuity and initiative, right?
