OK Get this... the GS500 is not eligible to be insured by them... cos its a sport bike... needless to say my eli 1000 is covered... its a cruiser right....
Someone please suggest me a good insurance co... house, car and bike... damn I might have to call state farm and all state and farmers... though their snooty agents totally put me off.
Cool.

I've heard that if you have a good record, Bear River Mutual is pretty good, particularly car and house... but that's a Utah company, and might or might not be willing to service ppl in other states.

State farm will rip you off, and care not at all how long you've been with them when they decide whether or not to continue your insurance if you have, say, a couple accidents and a couple tickets (ask me not how I know).

Progressive is rumored to be about the best (price and service) for motorcycles in general...

My suggestion would be to talk to an insurance broker (talk to several, even) that can check into lots of different companies.  They don't charge any more than if you went directly with an agent for that company, and they'll give you more options.

My car and motorcycle are insured through different companies.

Great news! I just saved a bundle on car insurance by switching to a motorcycle!

Progressive is charging me $75 (liability only) per year. Of course, I'm 36 & been ridin' 18 years. I've gotten the quote $244 w/comp/collision and uninsured motorist from their online source.

State Farm goes by displacement only...After Allstate tried to nealry quadruple  my rates (they changed my adress on just my bike policy...to an adress in the middle of the city...yet left my truck policy at the right adress..)... then after they admitted they were wrong they wouldn't lower my rates back  to what they were....

I had State Farm the next day. Paying less now too.

Funny how the bike with what ....3 times the power of the "sport bike" you have isn't actually a sport bike...

Maybe it has something to do with the new F-model with the full fairing looking more like a sport bike???...

Here is something that may come as a shock.  I know a little about the insurance business as I was a Risk and Insurance major and one point in time, but I learned that is actually cheaper for females to have the insurance than males. DO NOT ask me why!! My bike is insured through my lady, full coverage up to 5500 in damages, theft/vand. included. She is actually only 20 years old its costing us $125 every 6 months. When I called and got my quote, and I have a pretty fair driving record mine was almost double from StateFarm and that was ONLY Liability (the state's min.)  I wish I could remember the name of the company but I can't rememeber now. Then again, I am here in the MS and TN.  Srinath you should definetly consolidate your interest though. Most companies will give you a discount for having one policy.

Good luck.  :thumb:

State Farm tends to be really good for sportbikes because of their displacement policy.  Progressive is good for criusers, but charges the usual couple thousand (full coverage) for sportbikes.  Do you ever see Progressive talking about sport bikes in their commercials?

But, as you are probably going for liability on the GS, shop around.  State Farm was the cheapest major insurance company I checked when I got my insurance.

AAA (yes, the same one that does roadside assistance) provides insurance based on engine cc. I have all my cars and the motorcycle with them.

I had decent, albeit slightly high rates on my 1992 Honda VTR 250.
I think it had to do with recently getting my motorcycle license.

I switched to American Family, and the rates dropped to about 1/4 of what progressive was chargine me, based ont he fact they went by how long I had my license period, and that I've been riding motorcycles since I was 10 years old.

(basically they look at how long you've had a drivers license, how old you are, and how much riding experience you have)

Also, when I got my GS I found out that it's cheaper through amfam to keep the policy in effect rather than drop it during the winter, as they only expect you to be riding it 6-8 months total through the year anyways.

I don't know what amfam classifies a GS as, but I know (as per my agent) that I should be glad I don't have a "big" sportbike with full fairings.

Just my $.02 worth, your milage may vary.

I use state farm.  I'm 21 years old and it costs me 13 bucks a month for liability.

only thing to remember about state farm:

My family has been with them for 20 years.  I got in 2 accidents, and then got 2 speeding tickets... boom.  canceled policy.  Wouldn't consider based on their experience with us, or anything like that.

We've found 2 or 3 other insurance companies that were all less expensive than state farm...  but with the $500+ a month for my car that they offered me, I'm no longer interested in doing business with them, now or ever.

just my $.02 =]

In Washington State, motorcycle insurance is NOT required. I don't really see a point to it anyway, they don't cover medical if it's my fault, and most likely I'll take most of the damage if someone else hits me. The motorcycle is not worth enough to get collision of comprehensive. So I'm thinking of just getting medical insurance instead.

Progressive's not bad.
The clincher is marriage and property ownership i think. Compared to my friends who own property and women, with clean driving records (mine too), they get a substantially lower rate from Progressive for the same insurance. The thing i like about their site is you can do endless quotes until you find the coverage level you like.

Hm, I have AmFam on house/cars and got a good rate on the GS, right out of MSF.  I think it was $160/year for comp/collision/liability.

State Farm is the cheapest but will only take you if you have
your cars insured with them.  I tried to insure my DL-650 with Rider in NJ
and they wanted a high rate because apparently they had a losses on the V-Strom 1000.  Through State Farm I'm paying almost half.

OK That was at 7Pm on friday, tried calling the idiots on saturday and stll got no where and now they had no idea what an eliminator was... maybe they ask their neighbor at the call center, and no it wasn't indian cos In india we have a 175 air cooled eliminator... but anyway... after a whole damn weekend of frustration and yelling at no one in particular and being on hold before and after.... I am actually thinking this place could use some damn outsourcing cos they are obviously not answering the phone... I called my agent this morning... and he said... "Liability only we can insure anyhting... we can insure a rocket ship"... ZL 1000 you say... no problem, same rate as the damn 535 virago or the slower than a bicycle KZ440. Whooo hooooo... also if the bike was insured before, and is in the list, swapping is easy, and its also covered as a occassional ride... cos NC lets you put plates only on what is insured and if you swap bikes you are supposed to swap plates and tell DMV... etc etc so valid plates = valid insurance in their point of view... and all of mine are all CA registered... so I guess I am home free. Thanks to all the damn confusing laws and getting a live person on the phone who knows what they are talking about.... the damn rocketships are insured.
Cool.
