Take my Vance and Hines advancer...Please

I located a nice used V&H ignition advancer and installed it in my bike. It seemed to run just fine, but ultimately it seemed a little off on the freeway. Specifically, the bike would hesitate and fail to accelerate in fifth and sixth between 6 and 7K RPM, essentailly limiting the bike's top speed. So, I swapped in the old part and the bike runs great. So, does the fact that my bike is an '01 as well as a California model make the advnacer not work right? Or, is there something else that I missing? Thanks for your help.

I have a 2001 with the advancer installed and the bike runs very strong in that range.  I believe that the advancer may make the bike more sensitive to problems caused by its inherently lean mixture - If your bike is otherwise stock, go up one size on all the jets - pilot, mid-main and main then try the advancer again.  Adjust the recommendation according to the other changes you may have made to your bike.  I bet it runs fine when re-jetted.

I don't think a normal advancer will work on the Cali model because of emmisions they alter the timning. Bob B. knows all about it and has explained it here before but I am not technical enough to remember so you might have to search. He used to fix them and send them back all for the cost of postage. Not sure if he still does it though but it might be worth a PM :dunno: good luck. You can alkways sell or trade it. Those things are like gold since they stopped making them.

MJM's got it nailed.  The Calif bikes are set up with less advance than the 49 staters in order to sneak under the wire of stiffer emission requirements.  Rejet accordingly and, like I bet newbieone has heard in the past,  it'll "run like a scalded dog" ;)  :cheers:

The bike is rejetted, has k&n pods, and a Jardine full system.  It was dyno tuned at that point.  I added the ignition advancer later, and the shop said that it would not mess with the mixture.  Should I have it tuned again w/the advancer?  Thanks.

advancer is defective in my opinion,

I have a 2001 california model (er, had) and I installed Bob B.'s IA without a problem. Ran quite well with it too. The california models DO have less advance but the difference is in the ignition rotor itself. If you install a V&H or Bob's home brew you've got the same whether its a Cali model or 49 state model.

If your bike was dyno tuned to perfection prior to the IA and ran like shaZam! after, only to run well when IA removed....well the answer is pretty clear. Toss that IA in the trash.
