Did you have to drain the oil in order to take the covers off? I've never done it before but I want to clean mine as well as replace the gasket. Not sure if I will make a mess if I don't drain the oil.

Short answer is yes. BUT it can be done. Draining and replacing the oil and filter is always a good thing anytime you work on your bike :dunno_black:

Sorry I just re-read what you wrote. You were talking about the TOP covers and not the SIDE covers so the answer is NO you DO NOT need to drain the oil. Sorry for my confusion.

If you meant the side covers then refer back to what I said before.

^^^ hahaha

Nah on draining the oil for the top covers.
A little bit did drip out from the front cover, not much at all.

The side covers, yes and no.

If you keep the bike straight up, then yes u have to drain the oil.

If you lean the bike on its side enough, you dont.
I watched a video of them changing the clutch plates on a super magna and they had it tilted on its side just enough not to have to drain the oil.

I was like, OMG he's been holding out on us. But I read further.  :icon_mrgreen:

Gonna do the cooling fins too  ;)

Tombstones81

Hell No!!!
No more sanding or polishing up aluminum for this cat for a Long time!
They wouldnt stand out much either unless the engine was black.

and got some more work done last night.

Cleaned the engine area up while the carbs were off.

Put the carbs back in
easy using a Longgg pry bar, putting the rear boots halfway on the engine and halfway on the carbs while the front ones are set in place.
and then just applying a little pressure at a time on the rear of the carbs to get the rear boots in place.

Tossed everything above the carbs back on that I took off.

Then the radiator and hoses, & filled with engine ice.

Grabbed the tank and got her started up with a little effort since the throttle and choke cables are off.

Engine sounded great, so I didnt mess up adjusting the valves :)

But with the seat and side covers off.... WOW did that exhaust sound like CRAP because of the leak.

Last bit of the night, decided to take the POS stock exhaust off.
Nicely came off with ease unlike the first time!

Was pretty shocked to see how bad the exhaust leak truly was!!!

Cracked on the opposite side of what I had originally repaired.

finally getting my axle and seal put on my car later today.
so I wont be getting over the garage until late.

Finally some actual progress & pics of the things I need to put on instead of just maintenance!

Got over the garage and my friend was napping, so I had to wait on getting help.

Took the gauge housing apart as Im going to repaint the gauges frame.
Tossed in some red led bulbs for the tach and speedo.
One of them had 1 out of 2 bulbs that were smaller and the bulb actually fit in the indicator slots.
So I took the extra small reds I had and tossed them in the temp and oil slots.
Then bought some matching colored ones for the rest.
Also need to snag some for the brake lights.

One guy showed up at the garage to hang out and then the owner finally woke up.

Jacked the bike up & got the rear rim off for extra room.

Got the new exhaust clamped together... UGH that was a b!tch!

Put the new exhaust in place on the bike and had to hammer (rubber mallet) quite a bit on the bottom pipes to get them flush all the way up onto the rear header pipes.
Clamped it all down and the exhaust is ON BABY!!!!
Except for the front headers because I had to clean up the rear rim and put it back on because the jack was in the way to put those on.
Then had to call it a night (3am almost 9 hrs later)

Exhaust is together and on the bike Tight as hell!!!!! (meeting points which is good)
No way I will EVER have to worry about another exhaust leak Anywhere!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA   :cookoo:

I don't know how, but this gets better looking every time. I love those swept up pipes. what a good design.

you have to ask yourself: How crazy am I going to get when those exhaust end start blackening up?
Your attention to detail is almost psych ward level, tomb. keep at it, its doing you well. (and your bike)

hahahahaha

My friend whos been helping me asked me the same thing about the exhaust turning black.

He completely puzzled me.
Im like HUH turn black?
He said yeah, the inside of the ends of the pipes.... ugh he had me worried there for a second.

The hell do I care if the inside is black, as long as the outside stays nice and purdy! hahahaha

kk got some more work done today!  :thumb:

Took off the handlebars and the top triple.
Began painting various parts.
Installed new throttle cables
Got the front header pipes installed.
Cut off half of the undertail of the rear fender eliminating the plate mount.

and finalllllyyyyyy!
Started the baby up with no handlebars or top triple! hahaha
had to pull the throttle cableby hand

Sounded freakin GREAT!!!!!

But no video of it until she is Finished! (which includes carb sync)

Also, the guy I bought the pipes off of along with a bunch of other items sent me this for nothing along with the throttle cables I bought off of him.

Put the gauges back together and back on the bike.
Mounted the new handlebars :) (going to Really enjoy the difference!)
and then got the new headlight mounted and wired up :)
Bright as hell!!!!

So ur stuck with crappy phone shots.
everything looks Way better.

SS Clutch line.
The rest of the LED indicator bulbs. (only had red for the gauges & the red indicator lights)

Tombstones81

Thanks! and HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Update! :)

Got a Little bit of work done tonight.

Would of been more but I wasted like an hour fiddling with the throttle cables.
Stupidly, I was putting the cables on with the throttle tube upside down ><
or else it would of taken me only a few mins.

After that, got my air horn installed and all wired up! :)
Holy Hell is that sucker LOUDDDDD!!!! heeheehahahahahaahaha!!!
thats going to be LOTS of fun O:)

and since the throttle was finally installed.
I started the bike up normally this time, to make sure everything was Ok.
Because now tomorrow, I can finally sync the carbs!!!

Then the rest of what I have to do is just a walk in the park :)

Oh yeah...
and the lower fairings are going to have to wait until its warmer out.
Its been mostly in the single digits all week here and I have to paint it outside (but not dry outside)

and this time I didnt forget my camera in the car! :)

so heres a clip of the exhaust without the carbs synced.
but of course, it doesnt sound as good or as deep on camera as it does in person.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200260738662335&set=vb.1269150161&type=2&theater

Hopefully the next one will sound better as I will have the bike outside of the garage when I do so.

and finally, some pics with the camera instead of my crappy phone.

Don't know about those bars. But will wait until it's finished, dressed with clothes on again and a photo taken outside of the workshop to really judge. But that exhaust is looking really nice.

Tombstones81

Those bars are a bit common to SM's.
They look WAY Better then stock, but most of the others have them tilted even with the mounts.

Im 6ft2, so I need mine further up.

and now that I actually got the bike turned around.... they are looking VERYYYYYYYY sweet! (fronts been facing the wall til tonight.

and UPDATE!!!  :thumb:  :woohoo:

Carbs finally got synced  :woohoo:
Ran and sounded Soooo much better and smoother!

Got the grips and controls finally mounted up on the bars.
Also installed the new SS brake line (SS clutch line tomorrow)
Freshly painted black side covers.
Rear fender installed and finally mounted my plate.

think thats it, freakin Exhausted! (the carbs ate most of the day)

forgot my camera at home again.
Phone had to make due.

and the levers and resi's are not done yet.
Brake line done but called it a night when I finished bleeding the fresh line.
and I have to do the clutch line tomorrow.
Then install the new levers.
and finally tighten them down.

Wheel bearings come tomorrow tho.

Started out installing the smoked turn signal lenses.
MMMMMmmmmm So much nicer!

Installed the new SS clutch line.
Yuck! old fluid got pretty nasty from the last time I flushed it.

K&N air filter in.
New speedo cable on.
Tied down what I could of the wires in front.

Went to go put the levers on......
My dumbass got the wrong ones, clutch lever is wrong....
Oh well, going to see about an exchange.

Got the headlight lined up and tightened down.

and then called it a night.

Now to Completely admit it....
Yes, that red seat was a HUGEEEEEEEEEEEE mistake!
If I could reach, I would kick myself in the head for it!
Thing makes me wanna Puke! hahahaha

Grateful I got the extra seat!
Going to pick the black marine vinyl up tomorrow and redo it.
WAYYY too slippery to use as it is now (the black one)

and of course, I forgot my camera Again!
so heres some more crappy phone pics.....
