My 1994 GS500E Project

Hello. Mostly a lurker here. I own a wonderfully kept 1994 GS500E.
Its engine is in really good condition, it does not eat/loose oil at all (last oil change was 3000km ago, and the level has not dropped a cm).

I love the GS bikes and have gotten really accustomed to it. I had a 1998 unit a few years ago till I totaled it. Had the most fun on it!

I am planning on upgrading this bike. I guess I caught that bug most of the riders catch after a while riding.
Im still not sure what Im going to do to the engine. I would very much like to convert it EFI, but realize this is a long project and I dont want to be off the road for too long.
For now, Im gonna do the common upgrades -
Recently got a brand new R6 rear shock from an R6 built for the track, its still in the mail, but should be here soon. Also going for a .80Kg/mm springs (havent decided if I should go with SonicSprings or RaceTech).

Next week the bike is getting dyno'd to get a reference for future upgrades.

A rejet kit along with K&N lunchbox and a custom full exhaust are next upgrades (I live in Israel and have an exhaust fabricator friend. am bugging him to fab up a full titanium exhaust. Might end up with a SS system though ;) ).

Once that is done, I would like to bore the engine to 78mm and get 10.5:1 CR pistons (MTC engineering 81-82' GPZ1100. Have been told they will fit). Along with the pistons I plan on getting mild cams from Megacycle Cams (384-70, .380 lift), along with uprated valve springs.
Not sure how much power Ill be getting from all those upgrades. Will upload dyno sheets of each step. Im not after crazy power, but another 10-20 horses across the rpm range will make the GS super fun!

Pics of the bike will follow shortly.

So, first pic of the bike. As you can see the bike came complete with my minime  :icon_mrgreen:
This is almost the same as I bought, except the fuel tank is scavanged from a purple GS. I also installed post 2001 carbs on the bike since my old carbs cracked and the newer ones were cheap to buy and in great shape.
Bike feels slightly less "oomphy" with the newer carbs, and there's the rare but occasional boom on deceleration.

I have a similar project in mind, I'm getting pistons from Arias Pistons but not 78 mm.  I'm not keen on boring the sleeves out to the max.  They will be more like 75mm.
If we could settle on the same size the custom pistons will be cheaper.  Arias can make any CR you want.

I sent my cams to Megacycle already for the same grind that you picked.

I'm using an exhaust from  a GSXR 750.  Titanium internals.

Hi Steve146. I think the sleeves can be bored out to 79mm, but am not certain it will hold under load.
Expect a pm shortly.

What CR are you going for?

White seat is interesting. Instead of all the work to get some more horsepower why not just get a SV650? Carb you put in has 3 jets, carb you took out has 2 jets.

Thanks for the carbs tip, but I already know (both from reading and from playing with the jets). It also has a different location of the vacuum line connection. Was easy to install.

And about the "why not just get a SV650" - This is the second GS i owned, and am loving the bike. It has sentimental value and I love projects!

OK some more images of my stock bike, taken at night.
Side view :

Front view :

Instruments view :

As you can see, the bike is completely stock.
Im going to try and flip the clip-ons in the next few days to get a more aggressive riding position. If Ill have someone with my, Ill document the process. If not, Ill just take pics of the finished example.

Also, if you look closely, in the first "Side view" image, you'll be able to see blemishes on the cylinder. Ill post a close-up soon. I got the bike like this. Anyone have any idea what might cause this? It doesnt look any worse than it did 2 years ago.

Engine Blemish :

Anyone know what could have caused this? And how can I make it go away?

Back of clips for future reference :

I think this is what adidasguy refers to as "Euro-1" type.
Probably type-2. Will measure everything in the morning to be sure. These for sure came stock with the bike. I am the second owner and know the previous owner personally. I dont think he wouldve neglected to mention this, but anything is possible.

Those look like the tall ones - the type-2.
Looking at photos of your bike, you have the tall ones. Which seems odd for a 1994 to have the tall ones. i didn't think the talls were used until 96 or 97. Then it s=could be the original ones. As they were not sold in the USA, I have been trying to put together the history of when each type of bar cane into use.
Then, the clips or bar holders are interchangeable between the short and tall ones. Possible they were swapped.

Installed 0.8kg/mm Sonic Springs today! The difference in immediately felt. Ended up using a spacer length of 110mm and an oil height of 115mm (as measured from the top of the oil level to the top of the forks, collapsed). Am pretty happy with the outcome!
