Interesting - states 1993 but wheels are 97-2000. Engine wrong color, but left and right sides replaced. Missing left bar end. Right is after market and brake lever bent. Looks like ball missing off end of clutch lever.
Oh,  painted fugley flat black.
2nd picture doesn't have the muffler!
Must have been crashed a lot or something for $900?

Haha I was looking at that add where he wants 500 dollars. Waaaaay over priced IMO.
I am into buying bikes that people have given up on and fixing them up!

RIP Patrick Lajko, I miss you man.

first time posting here.

i just finished the safety course and looking for a cheap beginner bike that i can learn to ride on and also learn how to do some simply mechanical/ maintenance work on. found this 97 gs500e

http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/3532874089.html

kelly blue books says $1200 retail value in excellent condition. he confirmed that its been laid down before at low speeds by the previous owner. yet is very firm on his 1500 asking price. how much should this bike cost

thanks everyone

based on what I've seen for current prices around Seattle, $1500 looks good for that bike. Anytime you can go lower the better. However it looks really clean and well taken care of. It does need bar ends and front side reflector (right side). Any bike will have some scratches to the engine cases. Without engine guards, just knocking it over will scratch them. Looks like it went down on the right side - scratching the engine and probably taking the right front reflector with it.

Check it for bent forks. Ask about the time it went down.

What you can expect:
Buy some OEM bar ends. Post a want to buy on this board before buying from ebay or elsewhere. Lots of people here have spare parts.
Fork Springs: Pretty much everyone agrees that stock fork springs are crap (even reviews of the GS500 say that) so $90 for upgraded front springs and it will ride like a new bike.
Tires: Check the age of them. Tread means nothing if the rubber is old and hard. Look at the date code on the tires - it might get the price down if tires are old. Generally I always put on new tires when I get a used bike. It is just my preference to know I have good tires.
Chain & Sprockets: Check them for excessive wear. If needed to be replaced: Under $100 for good chain and  sprockets.
Look at the brakes. Check for how much pad is left. Front wears more than the rear.
OIL: When was the last oil change? Check oil level and see how dark or smelly the oil is. If oil happens to smell gassy, it is a problem.
Battery: Howl old? It is under the seat. Check acid levels. If the battery has a drain, it should be on the right side, not the left. Should be 9ah or higher rated battery and not be so high it hits the under side of the seat (boo-boos I've seen in some used bikes and friends used GS500's: wrong battery!)
Rust: Look in the tank with a flash light. There will be some rust. Look to see if the gas is clear. Shake the bike. is gas still clear? If not, there's lots of loose rust.

Not a deal killer on any of the above, but something to be aware of and maybe get the price down.
Not meaning to scare you - just things to look at when getting a used bike. Any used bike will require some basic maintenance.
Take the check list. Let others add to the list. It shows you are a serious buyer. An honest seller would not hesitate to disclose anything. There WILL be imperfections in the bike - it is used and 15 years old. (We should have a list in the WIKI of what to check when buying a used GS500 - and what is a serious defect .vs. what is normal and easy to deal with.)

Get yourself a Haynes manual. You need a manual to know basic maintenance and when you need to get more assistance for hard to do things. Also get a volt meter. Necessary to check the battery and electrical system.

From what I see, $1500 is a good price for the bike - if it runs as good as it looks.

wow thanks for all that information its really appreciated.  been trying to absorb as much info as i can from this site and its a little overwhelming since i know nothing about bikes to begin with. hoping to put it to use soon.  one thing, is it usually better to buy oem parts, like for bar ends, instead of aftermarket items?

been trying to get the seller to lower the price but he isnt budging (he was using NADAguides while i used kbb and i didnt know which one was better). since i was buying my first bike, i didnt wanna get cheated or anything so i was hesitant. but i will go with the price as long as the test drive is fine. thanks for your help

We're here to help.
In Seattle right now there isn't a GS500 for under $2900.
One person is selling one for $4900! I bought my 2009 NEW for $3999 on sale in May of 2010.
Prices for GS500's are going up - demand is there because it is such a reliable bike, easy to ride and super easy to work on.

Are you saying I'm a parts whore? Hey - just because I got a car load of stuff today does not mean I'm a parts whore.
I'm just an eccentric collector of vintage and newer GS500 parts.
