Light years off I am afraid - I will raise the clue stakes and say that in general I use a hand held annemometer instead these days.. The pictured item is used along with another piece of kit which I omitted since it would give away too much..

i should be embarrassed, and be able to recognize an over sized pitot tube  for an airspeed/ windspeed indicating system. i work around airplanes everyday.

Very good sir, it is indeed - It is a building services Pitot tube for duct air velocity measurement (when used with an inclined manometer).

here is the clues, will fit in the palm of your hand. it is a tool. used as a third and forth hand for doing this outdoor activity.

OK i am a new guy here and will give another clue..if you fly fish you most likely have one of these. that may give it away.

Dont fly fish but is it used to thread the spool?

it has to do with the line and actual fishing. good guess though!

for those of you that love to google stuff like i do..try blood snell or double nail knot.

errr... so ... following from the clues... a mini-portable type jig thingy for assisting you in the joining of the backing to the actual casting line and the casting line tip to the leader/tippet ?? .. i reckon... to make the tracking of the knot and neatness of the knot better .. for those with 'old man' eyes or cold fishing hands ..

still dont know the actual name of the widget ...

and i tie .. or used to when i had the time... all my knots freehand... sure i swear a bit more ... and my eyes can still see ok .. plus .. i had to tie a hell of a lot of knots when practicing my fly fishing.... i'd get carried away and whipcrack the fly off.... 11 in 45 mins was the worst day
