What do you need done? How's the bike twisted any better?

To be honest, not much at the moment - runs fine, feels good. Is probably due for a valve adjustment but only because it probably hasn't been checked, not because there's an issue. I've been thinking I'll take it to ozzy for a full service at some point. I haven't had it serviced yet and don't really know how the PO treated it.

Basically I'm going to wait until I've done a few thousand kms on it or wait for something to break (whichever comes first) before I bother! It's the "she'll be right" approach to bike maintenance.

Twisted

Nah still the same. Had to keep it on prime all the way home. I'll try and get the carbs synced at a shop this week. Tell em to rejet it if it needs it. I'll probably get a new rear tyre while its in there.

Tis a shame cause that bike rides like it is on rails now. You saw my tyres  :icon_twisted: You will have to have a go when I get the carb sorted. It will make you want a GS again.

slipperymongoose

Least you got rid if that flat spot. Hey just outa curiosity what pressures you running?

33 front 36 rear. Run that on the Monster too.

slipperymongoose

Wow and you have total use on your tyres? That's awesome we gotta do some more rides I gotta see what your doing.

No oiling the stock air filter? Must be a 450 thing, I definitely had to oil mine!

I've solved my fueling issues at last... I have no hesitation or stumbling anywhere and she pulls like a freight train... well... as much as a 450 can pull like a freight train anyway... haha

Gotta get your needles richer Twisted, that did it for me and it's a spectacular difference.

Oh, and don't bother looking at my tyres when we ride together, I still have chicken strips... mainly due to the low footpegs but also because I'm soft...

I'll go true road tyres next time instead of dual sports, might give me a little more confidence when attempting to crank it over a bit more.

I'll take it to a shop. They can sort it. I have no idea why it suddenly started running lean. I'll ask at the shop if I am supposed to oil it. It is only a paper filter. After cleaning thr carbs today it only runs on prime setting on the petcock. Runs outta fuel on the on setting. To hard basket.

Can you fit Pirelli Sport Demons on your GS rims?

slipperymongoose

Yeah I've never seen a paper filter that you oil.

Aaaah paper filter, no oil for sure. The stock 450 one is foam so a bit of engine oil is required.

Sounds to me like your vacuum hose is crimped or not clamped properly or maybe not even plugged into the vaccum port... did you have the tank off today? I'm assuming the 500's have a vacuum operated fuel tap.

My 450 ran dry on the way home about 1 minute after filling the tank... the vacuum port on the left carb had popped out and therefore I only got to go as far as the float bowls let me... Blue loctite fixed that issue!

Not sure on Sport Demons, I've got 18" rims front and rear which can make it difficult (which is why I have mismatched dual sports). I was thinking of BT45's next time around. I want to stick with the sizes I have now so I don't have to recalibrate the Acewell again. 100/90-18 up front and a 4.10-18 on the rear. A 110/90-18 would be fine on the rear too as the Acewell runs off the front wheel.

Yeah tank off. Hoses are all back where there supposed to be. At idle all is well but under load it dies. I'm thinking a possible blockage but dunno how.

peteGS

Hmmm... I'd be double checking the vacuum and/or fuel hose aren't crimped up somewhere. I've come close a couple of times with my vacuum hose because of the extra cable I have going to the choke on the carbs. It's not there in stock form and is where the vacuum hose runs...

Come to think of it I seem to recall there's two fuel taps on a 500? Is that right?

Twisted

yes one under the tank and the petcock on the frame. Double checked all the hoses for crimps and kinks. Checked all the connections. I can't see anything wrong.

peteGS

Hmmm... crap in the tank maybe? Blocked filter? If it idles, will it idle forever I wonder or does it just idle longer because it's not using fuel as quickly? It will idle just on the fuel in the float chambers for a while...

If you take the vacuum hose off the carbs and suck on it, does fuel start running out of the fuel tap? That'll tell you if your tap is working properly or not... oh and are both taps vacuum operated? I haven't seen the 500 setup first hand yet.

Welcome to slip's garage, where a running bike a little lean turns into a non running bike..

Twisted, first thought was pinched line. But I'll go for broken vacuum diaphragm now..

Welcome to misters garage where he couldn't help if he tried. I couldn't believe the carbon/oil in the carb from the PAIR system. And twisted now has the cleanest carbs if all the Aussie GS's minus brand new ones.

Least I don't pretend to know what in doing. I have better things to do with my time than tear apart a motorbike. I have ozzy for that. I exchange my money for free time.
