Hey guys,

Ok so, this is embarassing. When I bought my GS500f last year, I could have sworn the guy I got it from said he was putting 91 octane in it. I have been putting 91 in it since then, with no problems. Now after bothering to look into it, apparently this bike is designed for 87 regular octane fuel. So my question is, how do I transition to it, considering the bike is currently running on 91?

Any suggestions?

Just start filling it with the 87 octane. No harm in that - that's how the middle grades are made - they are mixed at the pump! Your wallet will thank you. Been running my 2007 on 87 octane for 65,000 miles without any problems!

Cheers!

Ah ok, I wasn't sure if I had to drain it or fill it at half-way. By the way, we have pretty much the same ride, looking good!

Don't put in diesel gas but diesel oil is good for the GS.   :icon_lol:

Zwerski

The GS is a blue-collar bike: regular gas, regular oil.

I use 93 in mine because my truck is custom tuned for it and because I keep several extra gallons on hand in cans in the shop. Like today, there was a group ride, before I left I topped off my tank with 93 from one of my cans. I very rarely fill my bike up at a station.

87 will burn just fine though. These aren't high tech performance engines

I had a thought.... (yes i did!) .. with Fuel type overtones...

Movie, The Fastest Indian .. at Bonneville the old chap takes his heart tablet (nitroglycerin as they used to use/still use?) .. and also puts a 'nitro' pill in the tank of the bike before his run ...

would this work? ... has anyone tried it? ... if it would work then what kind of performance gain/modification (if any) would happen or was he after?

Nitroglycerin like a lot of chemicals has many different uses according to concentration/volume , application intended and method of delivery .. (same as high spurts of nitrous oxide makes vehicles go fast but low spurts makes pain go away temporarily at hospitals) ..

thats my "Can of Worms" for the day  :thumb:
