Newer gas tank?

Hi everyone.

I have a leak in my gas tank from the previous owner, which some of you might recall my thread of. I have a 1990 GS500E and I was wondering (just out of curiosity) if the tank from a 2004 could be used. I was thinking that since this bike was made over the years with very little adjustments here and there, would the tank from the '04 fit? If it turns out that the tank sealant job that I will be performing takes a turn for the worse, I'd like to know my options.

Thanks all!
:)

Newer GS tanks have different seat to the older ones. It wraps around the tank instead of going up it. Other than that I see no problem unless you are running the OEM style clip ons which you may have issues with bar clearance from lock to lock.

Newer tanks do not have the front mounts for the tail plastics.
That and the different seat.
There are plenty of good 89-00 style tanks. Post a want-2-buy. People are parting out bikes. Ebay always has some.
It can be done. You can make the mounts for the front of the side plastics.  Others have done it.

Its really easy to convert it. Search around on here, there is a great write up.
Friendly fire, isn't. But it's the most accurate. Semper Fi

It'll fit fine. Seat will look a little off, but still an improvement. Just gotta rig up something for the front mount of the old plastics

Yeah, I thought of posting a WTB but like I said, I'm still gonna try a sealant job first and if that gets sour, then I'll try other things. Just gauging my options. Thanks again!
