How many of the items that you see as "untested/as-is" do you think are actually tested and confirmed nonfunctional? I've always assumed that this would be the case since it would be so easy to get away with, but do you guys have any experience with it?

as a seller no. as a buyer yes. bought a dozen wristwatches out of tel aviv i believe it was. listed as is. bought shipped for 10.98 us. sold one for 62.00 another for 10 etc. a cpu which normally @ the time was 400+ ( 4 years ago) got it for 98 shipped. guy had a perfect rating so i had no qualms with taking this chance. ( and it worked fine after a bios flash. ) i try not to get into an as is auction/sale unless, 1 i can afford to lose the money, or 2. if item doesnt work, i can either sell it and make some of it back, or part it out for other uses. ( have yet to have to cross that bridge though)

I check the feedback. If they sell crap, then they will get blasted for it.
I look carefully at the pictures. Those tell a lot.
I buy parts lots "as" and sometimes something in it is crap, but overall I make sure I will get my money's worth if everything isn't usable.
You have to remember "as is" is "as is" no never expect it to work.
If "tested", then you can get a refund if not good.
And I assume "untested" is just that. Sometimes you don't have time to test each part off a running bike where the part sells for $5-$20. "Untested. Bike was running when we took it apart". That usually means good part.

I sell a lot of misc. things on e-bay.  My eBay username is "jesterindy" if you want to look at my past items.

Only one time over 140 or so feedback did someone just gripe and complain.  Although I was right, I told the person...my mistake, send back please with a full refund.  Waited, sent other e-mails, and still waited.  Nothing ever happened.  Some people will gripe just to gripe.

Most of my things for sale are "as-is" only because I cannot test the functionality of the unit.  My boss dropped off a mystery box full of cell phones, PDAs, etc. and said "let's split 50/50 anything you make"

Made like $70 for my share, but most were so old and wouldn't turn on that I just wanted rid of them.  In my case it's just not possible to check everything out.
Bikeless and Broke at the moment...
