I followed BaltimoreGS's video on how to remove the carbs and clean the jets. Now that I'm putting everything back together, my throttle stays stuck open.

It snaps right back when the carb is flat, as in the slide openings are looking up and the butterfly openings are looking down. But as soon as I turn it 90 degrees and push the carb on to the motor, the throttle will not snap back. It just stays open or it slowly closes over maybe 10 seconds.

I have both sides of the throttle cables on the correct side, and they are set as "loose" as they can be mounted to the throttle cable bracket. No, they do not need to be lubed, They worked fine two days ago and they work fine when the carb is flat.

I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but it's 1am and i'm dead tired. I'm hoping one of you night owls knows a solution.

I'm probably going to miss work tomorrow because of this. . . .  blah.

You say they work until put on. That leads me to believe the cables are binding.
Check cable routing. Maybe the cables need lubing.

+1.  I think either a cable is bound or broke.

This is a video of the cable attached and the carb flat and then i place the carb in the correct position and you can see how slow the return to closed is. In the video, I am going WOT and releasing each time. You can see how quickly it snaps back at first and how it seems to hang up on something once the carb is in position.

What do you think? Is there a specific procedure to connect the throttle cables? Maybe I'm twisting something as I flip the carb from one side to the other to attach the cables.

In your photo, the cable on the left is one that must pull out to let the throttle return. That cable has a sharp bend at the connection. Try straightening that and see what happens.

So straightening them did nothing. But. . . . .

I did get it to snap shut while the carb was in position by removing the return cable side.

It's like I need more slack but I don't know how . .

Repair or replace the cable that is causing the binding.

Did you check to see if it is bound in the throttle tube?  It may have been jarred in taking the carbs on and off.

Also, it may have kinked somewhere and now it's hung up.  Take the end of the cable and move it.  If it does not move freely, check the throttle end or check for kinks.

When did the carbs change to having 2 throttle cables? My '93 only has one

I think the carbs changed in 2002.

Okay, so I completely disconnected the throttle return cable and checked for any binding. I got nothing.

It only seems to bind when I put tension on the whole system, when I complete the circuit and both sides are connected to the carb. I checked the throttle tube as well. I took it apart to make sure it was connected right and I didn't see anything out of place.

I think it has something to do with how you set the tension on the cables at the carb with the lock-nuts.

Somebody who deals with the carbs all the time has got to know what going on.

Probably a dumb question, but did you try to adjust cable tension on the grip adjusters as well?

I hadn't played with it yet since they were in the exact same position as they were before the problem arose.

I'm actually looking at them now. I reattached the carb and tightened both cables on the carb end. I now have the throttle tube assembly open completely. If I wiggle the black throttle assembly box around I can get it to snap back like it should on occasion. As soon as I try to get it back together and tighten things down then it binds again.

So this is where I have the throttles adjusted to.



It returns on its own as long as the handlebars are straight or turned left. Turn them right and the throttle doesn't return likes it supposed to still.

Cables too tight. You can adjust at the handlebars for more play.
There SHOULD be some play.

There was enough play before and the handlebars haven't moved so I've lost it somewhere else.  I'm trying to find the somewhere else.

I've noticed that the throttle cable mount on the handle bars can be moved and rotated around even though i feel like I have the mounting screws more than tight. I also noticed that the little "elbows" that the throttle cables  pass through just before they enter the throttle housing, move quite a bit when I turn the throttle.

I dunno? Is this normal?

Sounds like one or both cables are not tight at the handle bar control.

FYI: There should be a nib on the control that goes in a hole on the handle bars so it won't rotate on the bar. Maybe get a replacement? Or add some tape around the bar so it grips better.
