Well i know its more than likely been discussed over and over again, but my searching for my answers isnt working very well, ordered clip ons (vortex) and a headlight bracket (got the part number from parts unlimted from one of the random conversations) and wondering what everyones done about the gauge/old handlebar plate, any replacements? options? or ideas about running diffrent gauges/no gauges and still having an oil and netural light? all ideas would be helpfull

no reason to change them.  The clip-ons will mount just fine with the stock upper triple clamp and gauges.

I do have a top plate with the mounts milled down smooth. Needs a bit more work to feather the edges though. You interested

got pictures?ill gladly play with the idea, i just feel like its gonna be unsightly to have that there when the clip ons go on, if anyone has pictures of how anyone else has done it, i dont know if im ready to go to a digital dash

The '89 US model and other years of european models came with factory clip-ons... not sure how it would look, but I'd bet if you just got the top plate from an '89 and excluded the clips, it would look better than your current top plate.

Im pretty sure they wont fit without lowering the front end. I had some on mine and it was either remove the headlight and mount under the top triple, or mill the top triple and lower the front an inch or two. I tried the second method and I ended up not liking it because it leaned the bike so far forward. Then i realized i was commuting on a GS500 and took them off complete.

Mounting them below the top triple will be very low.

Here is a pic with my current clips ons and here is a pic with the top plate I shaved down, filled in and painted. This top plate in the pic and the clip ons are for sale although I havent listed them yet. I ride my bike all the time and have no issues with bumps or turning.

I have another top plate just like this one but needs a bit more feathering of the edges and painting.

I kind of want bars just like that but cant make my mind up for some reason. I do however hate the stock bars on mine.

The OEM's (89 or European) are nice. Swap the top plate and move the controls. off you go! Riding in under an hour.

If you don't like them, you can resell them and no loss of money.
