I bought a '91 off of craigslist for pennies.  It sat, they pulled the airbox and carbs, left 'em on the driveway, and they walked away.  So, I bought the K & N lunchbox filter, not realizing it requires rejet, which looks easy, but then more or less necessitates a pipe.  Is there any reason I can't just cut off the stock muffler and put an Emgo reverse megaphone (or similar) on there?  Do I need the wire brazed onto the header that holds the center stand off the pipe?  Has anyone tried this cheap slip-on idea?  The hope is to get the whole bike on the road for under $450, and the bike and carbs have me at $355 already, so Yosh or V & H are right out of the question.  It may be that I should cut my losses and head back towards stock, but it seems a shame not to have a little fun on a naked air-cooled parallel twin...

I stuck a long screwdriver down the muffler, and about 12" in, it experiences resistance.  Has anyone tried to drill out that baffle?  That might be the cheapest way to increase flow, and wouldn't attract cop attention, because it looks stock.  ?

If you are struggling with the idea of sending funds or maybe being limited in funds, then stop now. Bikes are not cheap hobbies to have.

You can use any muffler or slip on you want. A Yoshi is not out of the question if you do it right. You can buy a damaged one off ebay. I bought one where the can was crushed. A new can from Yoshi is $65

carl ive had 5 gs' now. my first 97, i bought the lunchbox. then punched the stock gs can. rode bike hard to get pipe hot. took a spud wrench and hit baffle, popped out.  then took drill and drilled 4 holes around ende of inner baffle. installed filter ( after rejet) IIRC was one size up on jets. and if memory serves, 2.5 turns out on screw?

Emgo is the cheapest muffler most likely. I have one that I removed the baffle on. It's one of the 15" shorty ones

Those handle bars are just a different kind of clubman bars.

They're like no clubmans I've ever seen. They look flat, almost like SM2s, but backwards.

Oh sorry, They are the SM2s but backwards. Sometimes looking up club man bars you can find those style bars.

They're definitely a different model.  I'm on the hunt though, I dig em!  Regular clubmans are too steep and the SMs are WAY out of my budget, lol.

sorry for the late reply, those are 1" Harley bars. I got used from a repair shop, maybe off bobber. kinda look like flat clubmans, I love them.

I finally had to answer my own question.  I cut the exhaust pipe just before it starts to bend upward toward the muffler, and bolted on an Emgo "Ball-End Upswept" muffler.  Had to bend and drill the hanger, but that was no big deal.  $60, muffler handled.  I'm jetted 40 idle, 140 main, with a K&N Lunchbox air filter and two washers under the slide needle.  Seems to run fine, backfires at high rpm on a closed throttle.  Sound is...vintage?  Old School?  Pretty loud.  I think that Emgo also make an upswept Dunstall style muffler, which is a glass pack, and repackable one.  That would be the more sociable choice.  Maybe I'll have both, and use the Dunstall for touring, where noise can be fatiguing, though this pipe sounds fine from the saddle.

You mean a new shell that you can wrap around the guts from the old muffler? I'm pretty sure a new stainless Yoshi slip-on is $300.
