When I was born Jack was OLD the way you guys think.  Now I am old, and Jack lingers on.  The amazing thing is he could probably still kick my arse!

Gears don't move, dogs move.  There's hardly room in there for a real neutral let alone a false neutral and certainly not enough room for a gear to move out of engagement..  And it's not a bent fork, everyone has it.  I remember hitting it on my GS a couple times many years ago but have not done so since.  You keep riding as long as I have and you'll be perfect too.  :thumb:   My great grandchildren call me Biker, I like that.  They're getting old too but not as old as John!    :icon_lol:

I get them on mine occasionally, but I at least know *exactly* what my problem is... my 32 year old pivot for the shift lever is flogged out and wobbles around a little too much... typically it's from 3rd to 2nd that I get the false neutral which is when I *really* want that engine breaking...

One day I'll get around to sleeving it and fixing it...

Peter, the mention of the oil was because, changing to a different oil can fix the False Neutrals (FN).

As I upgraded the oil I used from Motoul 1000, to 3000, 5100, 300v and now Mobile 1 Racing 4t, my gear changes became progressively smoother and fewer FNs. Now it's at a point I hardly feel gear changes and never get any FNs.

Being firm/firmer with your changes helps too.

Looks like its time for an oil thread and how that will solve your neutral problem :icon_twisted: :icon_rolleyes:

Well I think its time to quote myself :icon_rolleyes:
I use full synthetic and have never hit a false neutral :thumb:

Yeh I'll have to disagree with you there. There are cheaper brands out there that do the same job.

A stiffer spring on the idler wheel that centers the drum in each gear does help.  I find that once you get over the hump it then wants to drive itself to the next gear.

I've tried with double springs and it was too much, so I cut 1 coil off the one spring and that seemed better.
I'm going to be playing with it more.

One more thing I was thinking of is replacing the pivot bolt with a normal bolt and a bearing out of an RC car. Or maybe get a star CNC'd with deeper valley's or a sharper point.

I believe this is a good workaround.

 Just spoke with the main man of the service department at Gold Coast Suzuki... Told me it is a waste of money to use fully synthetic oil in a GS 500... They use semi synthetic oil when servicing GS 500's that's all they need he stated... The fully synth only glaze the engine, not good for it! WTF...  :dunno_black: Opinions?

Oh and BTW... He said the Fully Synth wouldn't make any difference to the false neutrals.  :dunno_black:

Twisted

How is it a waste of money if the full synth is cheaper than the semi synth? Sure the GS was made to run on mineral oil but its not gonna hurt using something better. People will tell you it is a waste of money running 98 octane in a GS too but I do it. I heard about the "glazing" thing. Apparently it happens if you switch to full synth then go back to a mineral oil. I'm not to clued up on this but mister has been running full synth in his GS forever with no issues.

Twisted

Like I said by his reasoning even running the GS on semi synth is a waste of money.

"Told me it is a waste of money to use fully synthetic oil in a GS 500... They use semi synthetic oil when servicing GS 500's that's all they need he stated"

People have been saying the same in here for years  :D but if full synth makes you feel all warm and fuzzy then go for it, its your cash  :thumb:

Some will say fresh oil will improve shifts, I agree it might......... but only because its fresh, not because its full synth.

Bike boxes differ from car boxes, the design is totally different, they are sequential and don't have synchros , baulk rings and helical gears so they cannot be compared. Materials and designs related to bike boxes have improved over the years but you have to remember the basic GS5 is decades old and therefore cannot be compared to the latest offerings which have only just come off the drawing board.

False neutrals will happen occasionaly and your bike is brand new which wont help because things are still going to be tight in there  :dunno_black:

I wouldn't worry about it at this stage..........unless it starts happening on a regular basis.
