push botton starter woes

So looks like I left the parking lights on this weekend, and the battery was dead.  I put the battery on a charger, put it back in the bike, and now the push button starter does nothing at all.  I push it.  nothing.  I fiddled with the wires and one of the wires snapped off the solder.  I held it in place with my finger and tried to push it, again, nothing at all.  I tried to hot wire it hoping to make it fire up, but nothing again...not even a spark.  Is there a plug or a fuse somewhere I may have blown I don't know about?

I can't seem to jumpstart it because the back tire just slides.

I need this for work tonight, so any help is greatly appreciated!

The value of a Haynes or Clymer manual: Trouble shooting section and location of fuse.

Possibilities:
1. FUSE: If nothing comes on - not even the oil light, then fuse. Under the rubber cover with the starter relay on the right side plastic. The visible fuse is a spare.

2. Kill switch?

When removing battery, always remove the ground first. If you accidentally short the +12 to the frame, you won't blow the fuse if ground disconnected. Re-connect ground after the +12.

yeah, I looked at my Haynes.  Unfortunately, the other lights come on...oil, neutral, highs, blinkers, headlight, taillight...

As for the kill switch.  there isn't one on my bike.  The previous owner removed it for some reason.

Looks like you have some wire tracing to do.

Required for start: (stock wiring)
Key on AND kill switch on AND clutch pulled AND side stand up OR transmission in neutral AND starter button pushed

Correct.

KILL: Kills bike, but lights will be on
Clutch Switch is in series with the start button
If in gear and side stand down: bike won't run. Side stand up OR in neutral

Since you had removed the battery, maybe you pulled a wire from the starter relay.

well, looks like something shorted and killed the cell in the battery.  Put it back on the charger and it was dead again.

I connected it to a car battery and the lights came back on, then I started fiddling with the wires and as I pulled them off, voila it cranked and started...of course, the wires are no longer connected again, but at least it's isolated to the switch panel it seems.

one other thing that was odd was if I would pull or replace the wires on the front brake light, that would cause activity too....maybe just coincidence that as plugged or unplugged the wires inside the starter button housing were crossing.

There is so much in the headlight bucket - like a 400 pound woman in size 2 spandex.

Pull the headlight and check all your wires. Insure that nothing is getting shorted on the headlight bucket (the openings for wires should have a rubber grommet on them).

You can have shorts anywhere around the front steering assembly. Easy for wires to get pinched in things and short at random times.

I've got a new switch assembly and battery on order from Bike Bandit.  My skills at soldering at weak at best, plus figured I might be nice in an emergency to actually have a kill switch. =)  When those show up, I'll crack of the headlight and give it a good looksy.

Thanks for the input. =)
