What kind of muffler is this?

Well... for once I looked through the selection of mufflers available for the GS500 just because I have nothing better to do and found nothing that looks like what I have. I'm just curious if anyone knows what exactly it is. Also, yes, it's dirty.

The reducing cone thing has a bracket that holds the rubber center stand bumper on, and the muffler tab looks unmodified and lines up perfectly with the mount. So was this something actually offered for sale, or some kind of custom job?

Im gonna go out on a limb here and say its a Yoshimura :icon_rolleyes:

You don't say!

I've just been googling and have not seen anything for the gs500 shaped like this one is and was wondering if it was a custom thing or they were made like this at one point.

Is this the part you mean?

If so I think it may be custom

I thought the same thing. Like I said, they even have a bracket welded on to hold the bumper for the center stand. It goes to the full diameter of the can too -- it doesn't have a front cap.

Definitely not an RS3. The muffler is perfectly round, some kind of brushed metal (I assume stainless by the sound when you tap it) and the tailcap is TIG welded.

Probably custom made with a yoshi metal decal. You can get the metal decals on amazon for a few bucks. Most importantly how does it sound?

Well iirc yoshimura did make a bolt on exhaust for our beloved gs500 once upon a time ...search yoshimura exhaust here on the forum... likely to get alot about slip on yoshies, but it may be hidden here somewhere. If it is a bolt on exhaust, all one piece from header to muffler, you sir just may have an extremely rare item there.  Please post more pics of your entire exhaust system if you can....the experts here will be able to spot an OEM header.

Definitely slipon, at least in the literal sense. The muffler outer cylinder clamps directly onto the reducing cone, and the reducing cone clamps on to OEM pipes. I know they're OEM because I'm aware the full yoshi system makes it difficult to change the oil filter.

More info on the actual muffler: It does have a baffle in it. It's a tube-in-tube muffler with the inner tube plugged near the end that the exhaust comes in, forcing it around that baffle and back through some really fancy looking holes into the inner tube and out the tail of the muffler. They almost look like a hundred little hood scoops in there when you look in the back end.

Sound? Meh. I don't really care too much so long as it's not stupidly loud, which it's not. At 5000 RPM the entire bike (intake and exhaust) are both eerily quiet, actually.

It looks quite similar to the Yoshimura that is on my bike. It too had the awkwardly placed bracket that the center stand rattled against. I solved that with a short session with the wizz wheel.
