My GS500 Track Bike in progress

So I bought a super clean 09 GS500F about a year ago, and after having an encounter with the a curb and cracking my fairing I began to mod it. An introduction to track days from my friend got me to mod in a direction that makes my bike a track bike. However I still have to commute and so my end goal is currently a track bike that works on the street. Any advice, criticism, praise is very much appreciated.

Man it looks like we have pretty much the same vision! It looks seriously great! Mine is a little messier than yours (some PO abuse, seems like it was about 3 different people's first bike)

If you want to shed some weight, try a shorai battery.  I would also do a full race exhaust from Jardine along with the lunchbox and stage 3 jet kit.  Keep us posted & good luck!!  :thumb:

Get your suspension and ergos set first.  The beefed up fork brace and progressive springs are defiantly a step in the right direction.  You'll need to do the rear too.  An R6 rear shock is a popular conversion.  I run a Works shock on mine.  DO NOT LOWER IT!  I don't know who told the guy above me that was a good idea but they should not be giving advice.  The GS has limited ground clearance as it is and at track speeds and the loads put on your suspension under heavy braking and acceleration you will find very limited ground clearance an issue as you get faster.  Tip in slowed with lowered bikes but high speed stability is a bit better.  Since this bike will hardly touch 100 your better of taking advantage of is agility and not lowering it.  Once again I cant stress enough how bad of idea that is.

You have clip-on's, that's good I would recommend adding proper rear sets as well.  Once again better ground clearance and better feed back through the pegs then with rubber padded stockers.

Do the brakes.  It looks like your on your way here to with the line upgrade.  I have an SV front brake on mine which is a definite improvement.  You can also go with a Katana wheel replacement out back and improve your options for better track rubber.  You could even run Pirelli slicks (110/150) at that point though not necessary.

After you do the intake and carb improvements you can take or leave the exhaust, its up to you.  I don't think the improvement vs. cost of a full system is worth it if the bike is set up well and tuned well.  I would recommend the V&H pipe though if you do.  When mine was raced the class didn't allow a non stock pipe so maybe I'm just use to it.

Good luck with your bike.

Thanks for the advice, the R6 spring I have in it isn't lowered. I tracked it once already with that spring without a problem, and I know from experience what you mean about the clearance issues. What kind of rear sets would you say? I never looked at rearsets because I was using the existing pegs as a measure when I've leaned it over to far.
I'm not really considering doing any exhaust work. I like the sound now and one of the tracks I go to has a sound limit and my bike is nice and set within the limit.

Is the SV front brake replacement a bolt on replacement?

Ive been using woodcraft rearset with no complaints.  If your doing well on the stockers then keep running them until you out grow them.  I'm a big fan of not changing things until you learn what you and/or the bike need.  You will probable want them at some point though.

I'll have to get back to you about the caliper.  Cant remember if a bracket had to be machined for that or not.

Ya I had alot of time on my hands and have been taking pictures the whole time. Soon I'll post some more images I documented removing the fairings, handlebars, creating the headlight, more handlebars, a crash I had at the track, and a couple other things including why you should never trust RideNow with oil changes. I also still have a majority of the parts and should probably hop into the selling forum and put up a post when I have time.

I bought a cheap '01 GS500E a few months back. Hope to track it next Sunday in New Jersey.

What group are you riding with April 21st?  I'll be in Jersey with my GS on April 22nd and 23rd running with Tony's Track Days.  To bad we'll mise each other.  Mines in full race trim, you could have a good look at it.
