Hello all, I have a bit of a problem that I could use some advice on. I was out riding my 99 GS500 yesterday when I noticed that my key had fallen out if the ignition. Fortunately, the key was attached to a heavy carabiner which became lodged between the tank and the handlebar so I did not loose it. I tested the bike out today with a different key and did not experience the same issue. Is this an issue of a bad key or is my ignition going bad?

Little bit of both.
The ignition barrel wears out so eventually almost any key will work.
Might be time to replace the pins in the barrel or replace the barrel
I am not interested in anything you have to say
Don't bother talking to me, I will not answer you

Perhaps the heavy Carabiner is the problem. Any locksmith will tell you that you should never hang extra items off the key as the extra weight caused rapid wear of the Pins/Wafers as well as the key itself. In my career as a car mechanic I have had to have many car ignition locks rebuilt. As most car ignition locks are horizontal, it is clear when the lock is dismantled as to the reason for the failure. If all pins/wafers are worn relatively evenly i is due to "normal" wear and tear. If the inner-top wafers are worn more than the outer-top ones and the inner-lower ones are worn less than the outer-lower ones it is due to excessive weight on the key pivoting it down at the slot and up at the tip. I only have a small ring attached which weighs nothing and when I remove the key it is immediately slipped onto the Carabiner on my belt for security.  :thumb:
