Hi everyone,
I'm new on this forum and English is not my first language so I hope explain to clear enough. I bought 2nd bike GS 500/2009 model, the bike was drop and the previous owner tried to fix, but while he fixed and the bike was stolen, after got back, she(bike) was very bad " damaged ignition block, fuel cap, harness chopped anywhere, mirror gone, all replay gone and he offered me cheap price, after got it, I work-out all the parts in needed,   now the bike all put back, look "OK" and started good, but when I put the gear on, its kill the engine stop (tried the gear when the bike on center stand). I do not know what's wrong, anyone can tell me what's happen, please, thanks in advance.

safety switch on SIDE stand .. like a plunger/push rod .. if it is there look for loose wire, if not there maybe look for the wires and make a bridge/join? ..

a wiring diagram is good idea .. for wire colour .. multimeter/voltmeter is also good idea for checking

+1 on sidestand switch but could just be the sidestand is down while it's on centerstand and just needs to be put up to start.

... gee Jack... you make it hard on a young fella!! .. i been trying to 'think outside the box' with things like this lately... and use K.I.S.S logic... but you keep on sliding even more basic stuff in!!! ...  :thumb:

you sly fox you!!  :D

I do the same thing half the time when I put the bike up to lube the chain and have to put stand up and restart.

.... lol... not me!!  :icon_rolleyes: much! ..

definately wasnt me either the other night that put the bike on centrestand to put a set of new heelguards on.. then washed it... then got ready to go out for a ride .. swung my leg over.. started bike... clicked into gear ... let clutch out... looked puzzled... then rolled bike forward off centrestand and tried again!! ..  :icon_rolleyes:  .. my body position was still forward enough to leave the front wheel down and rear wheel up.. so glad the missus was inside and not looking!  ;)

+1 for the side stand switch. If the switch is indeed bad like mine was you can just replace it or cut out the switch and jump the wires together. Saves like $50

joe58

Thanks for quick reply, i tried when side stand up either disconnect the plug and jump the wires together, still nothing happen, then i tried without any stand and sat on the bike with clutch lever in then press the gear on, the engine cut off straight away.

maybe the wire cut/damage not at switch... might be further up into wires .. bit hard to follow it through sometimes but if other owner has chop a lot of the wires then maybe bad connection elsewhere...

in gear and stop engine HAS to be that circuit!?

joe58

When engine stopped, with the ignition key on position, i put gear in and hear "click, click" at replay, where i jumped green and black/white strip together

Janx101

if switch is there .. and relay is there...best to use switch if working... but if wires joined and relay click click .. i think loose wire somewhere else.. relay goes click cos contact ON .. or contact OFF ... dont think it should keep clicking

hopefully Adidasguy can comment on this... he is one of the big kahuna on wiring!

Hi! last night,  I had a few more tries, kick engine up then put in gear, but nothing change (engine cut off when gear in any position), opened sprocket cover clean and put it back, leave 1st gear on with cutch lever pull in but can't start engine (I think have to start with nature)do not know what's else I can do, any ideas, thanks.

Ok, some suzuki 101.....

To Start bike, put in neutral, pull in clutch and press starter button.

Bike will not start if in neutral and clutch not pulled in Because of the sensor in the clutch.

Next...

With bike running in neutral and clutch in you put it in gear and bike stops instantly, no small lurch forward, just dead.

Bike will NOT keep engine running in gear with side stand down Because of side stand sensor.

Next...

Bike is running in neutral and clutch is in, you put in gear, bike lurches forward and stalls.

You lack the revs to keep the bike's engine running. In this case, the engine needs to be revving at Least 2,000rpm.

Next....

Seeing as you can start the bike and getting it running in neutral with the clutch out, we can rule out the clutch switch. Because it happens as soon as you put it into gear, whether the side stand is up or down, you must FIRST rule out the side stand switch. IGNORE the position of the side stand itself. The switch must be ruled out, not the position of the stand.

If it's the lurching thing, then have the bike sitting on 2,500rpm and see how you go.

As an aside, what is the oil level like?

Thanks all guys, solved it out, the stater replay, where's the pin out connect to side stand switch was broken (maybe the previous owner broken it then used glue or he did something just little intact), just swapped the 2nd one, i got it form bike yard. Bravo, it done. Thanks again all! this side very helpful
