Hey all, i havent been on here in a while, but now that i have time to bring my 93 GS back to life, i am looking for suggestions to make a tool kit to keep under the seat.  any essentials?  anything that would be nice to have, but with a small footprint?  any suggestions welcome!

its good to be back folks!  cant wait to get on the road!

Badot

At a minimum I'd say:

Pliers (cotter pins)
Tire gauge
22mm (rear axle nut)
12mm wrench (chain tensioners)
10mm (tail fairings, shifter, petcock bolt)
13mm (gas tank bolts)
Oil plug wrench, spark plug wrench
Bit driver (carbs, boots, air filter)
Zip ties

Then you have all the other stuff... flashlight, small pump, plug kit, spare fuel line, other wrench sizes, gasket-in-a-tube, hex keys... etc. Stuff that takes up a fair amount of room but if you need it, you need it. It's really a balance of how much you want to carry, how far you're comfortable tearing it down on the side of the road, and how much of an inconvenience it is if you need a tow.

well, that was exactly what i was looking for!!

i was mainly curious about which wrenches would be the most useful, but this would be the perfect long-trip kit for sure!  personally i would rather be prepared then screwed.  i agree - if you need it, you need it.

my favorite in this kit - zip ties.  back in high school, i had a 1990 vw jetta with a front end entirely supported by zip ties!

thanks again

You can spend $10-$15 and change out a lot of the bolts on the bike to Allen head and then only need to carry a few Allen keys for that.

A cellular telephone and a towing plan.

That's all you need.  If you can't limp home...you'll most likely have to get towed anyway.
Bikeless and Broke at the moment...
