I found him outside today! Its body was about the size of a grain of rice.

What sort of Lens and flash? I can never get enough light with my Pentax DSLR and old Macro M42 lenses, but never want to spring $3k for a decent macro lens..

Canon Rebel XTi with stock 18-55mm 'kit' lens. Flip-up flash.

The settings: 1/200sec shutter speed, F16 aperture, ISO 100, 55mm focal length, and the flip-up flash dialed down two stops. I used a sheet of white paper over the flash to diffuse the light (careful doing this, though, because it can scorch the flash lens).

I used to have a really good lens and an expensive flash but I sold them a while ago. I wish I hadn't, I could have taken a much better picture.

Am pretty impressed with a kit lens getting it that sharp on macro - the diffuse light source definately helped. :thumb:

My brother has a Canon or 2 - 1DX, 1DS MK2, 50D.. and about 20k worth of lenses...

I still use my old Pentax Kx with a bunch of the old Asahi primes (I especially like the 50mm 1.7 and 135mm 2.0), and a beast of a 50-500 Sigma that with crop comes out at 75-750..

I had a Sigma 1.4 50mm for my Canon. Most ridiculous sharpness ever.

What helps is I use -all- manual settings, including focus. I also usually try to under-expose my shots by about one full stop and then brighten them up in the RAW editor. I find that without spot metering (the XTi does not have spot metering), it's almost impossible to do macro.

One cool feature I found out my camera had recently is it does multiple exposures - knew it did HDR capture, but multiple exposure has been fun playing around with.

Have you tried CHDK on your Rebel?

No I have not. I've heard of it but never played around with it.
