You almost get bonus points for that one  :woohoo:

OldMech - you are close - it is a switch of sorts...
EDIT: here is a clue - it is designed to stop something from happening by doing something that happens on your GS500 (both cylinders)
EDIT2: another clue - it has been replaced by a TVS in modern "non stone age" systems

oldmech

would it be a voltage suppressor/surge protector?

Kiwingenuity

It is indeed - spark gap arrestor - been replaced by semiconductors these days, but the old ones work fine - use an inert gas and depending on the spacing of the electrodes can save your precious control equipment from being destroyed..

These ones were still in service - preventing unwanted 200kV signals making it out of a substation to an adjacent timber mill.

You're up  :thumb:

oldmech

ah yes , good old vacume tubes still do the job. give a few to find something good to put up.

maybe oldmech got blowed away in a twister?!?!>..  :icon_eek: :dunno_black: ... hope he is ok!!

... lacking much happening .. i'll bang this in ..

a tube? for a display.

Agreed. Looks like some kind of tube cap to me.

Janx101

Lol... No not a tube cap .. When I was rummaging though a old box at work (one of those multi thing boxes a bloke just has to get from the auctions for $5 cos it looks too much 'good stuff'  ;) ) ... I found the thing ... I had it in my hands and still took me about a min to work it all out!! ... Then I was .... Ohhhhh ! I gotta get me one of these!! Oh wait .. I did!  :thumb:

In use ... The bent bar 'cross piece'  stays still while the round bit revolves ... I might even have to do a short video on the laptop to demo it after ident has been achieved ... Or youse give up....

I would add .... I have never seen this setup before ... But I think now that its possibly the most 'elegant' way of setting it up in that size range!  :thumb:

I reckon it gotta be a pretty old thing ... Jacks generation may have seen them frequently .... But I went looking for it online too once I had it ... Not found it yet!

Kiwingenuity

Janx - throw us a bone - I know I have seen one of these, just can't remember where..

Be aware, this is not very wise advise!

no not a coffee grinder ...

... and a bone eh? ... well ... in the lower pic .. that random sliver of metal in the lower half of the thingy ... its quite a bit longer than the bit you see sticking across .. could say it coils around a bit .. hmmm?

edit ... roll that around in your engineering headspace and see how you go

Kiwingenuity

Some sort of thread / profile cutting device?

Janx101

Nah , .... You gonna be annoyed .... And amazed ... And maybe want one when you know what it is... It's a very simplistic engineering solution for a fairly common concept ...

... Think less tech

oldmech

is it a wheel/roller that clip on somehow?

Janx101

Nup .. Not a wheel ...

Think in the pocket of perhaps ... A builder .... A carpenter.... Some mechanics .... Perhaps an engineer ... A handyman ....

It's a device (admittedly simple) .. That every man uses

pliskin

I don't see any "silver bit" in the bottom pic. But I'll make a guess. Is it a wind up timer?
