oldmech

caddis? you got them buggers over there? i thought everything over there was poisonis? or would take a bite out of you. :D

Janx101

yeah.. caddis .. cicadas .. mayflies .. lot of trout streams around the world seem to have versions of the same critters eh ...

yegods!!! .... no... not them... thats a mother love only critter right there!!  :icon_eek:

Kiwingenuity

Certainly some interesting critters right there - still think I would prefer fishing in the US compared to Oz - last time I went fishing in Cairns I am not sure if I caught a shark or a croc, but it just kept on swimming.. some great fishing to be had in Oz really, never tried freshwater though.

Went fishing a few times when I was in Canada - some good fishing there - imagine some parts of the States would be similar on lakes / rivers?

The bug in the picture - Giant Stonefly?

Janx101

eh Kiwi , depends on how your 'runaway' moved.... if it was a fairly quick but steady pull .. most likely shark ... possibly a croc... though from what i know they will usually surface so they can see you ?

im gonna guess a little further... if it was just a really strong slow underwater pull.... most likely a big stingray?!? .. had one of them on the line up in NT years ago... 20lb line on a strongish boatrod and shimano overhead reel (smaller one not the game reels) ... we had to follow him down the river for a while to gain any line... was like trying to pull up a jammed anchor! lol.... got him to surface ... about 4' tip to tip... 'decided to set him free' ..  :D

they aint quick .. just strong!

Could have been a Stingray now that I think about the last one I caught - just a really strong pull up river. was in a tidal part of the estuary / river that runs out at Cairns.

What I remember most about Cairns (aside from sitting in a pool drinking beer while bats flew around, was a hatch of cane toads and a heap of kids running around trying to squash as many as they could..

Janx101

yeah they get right down on the mud and hoover along eh ..

you see the beaches up at cairns?... sand like coffee-sugar size!! ... great if you want to clean your foot calluses up but too cheap to buy a pumice stone or such..

lol.. cane toads... you see some hectic and creative ways to deal with them up there... best not mention it though.. might have the PETA fans down on me!!

How about a Muskie mouth? One of these (Muskellunge) tried to eat my little brother when we where swimming at Raystown Lake, PA. They hunt with their heads out of the water. Looks like a gator coming at you.

And this dudes baby Muskellunge just because he has cool hair.

Ooooh yes, they are one of the tastiest fresh water fish IMO. Same with Northern Pike. They are similar to Muakie's. Both have very sharp teeth.

I am so glad we don't get pike here.. maybe we should start a fishing thread - recommended spots / lures / flies etc.

OldMech started one a while back - could hijack it..

and yes it is! only  see these guys hatched for a short period. they are also nicknamed trout candy.
your up kiwi. :thumb:

Is is some kind of cricket?
Why are you looking here?

oldmech

it is an aquatic insect which spends most of its life as a nymph living under rocks in cool flowing streams and rivers.
it starts out like this...

then when it is ready to hatch it will crawl out of the stream onto a rock, tree, or whatever and hatch into the adult form which has wings and flies around. this one is a large brown stone and is about 2 inches in length. big clumsy buggers when they fly past your head. and look like this.

and crazy people like me tie abunch of fur feathers and what ever else we can find on a hook to make an imitation of them. all to catch a fish :cookoo: like this...

sorry for the longwindedness, but no it is not like a cricket. but trout love them too!

Kiwingenuity

Stonefly? but see you have nearly 500 species in North America alone..
