Stonefly? but see you have nearly 500 species in North America alone..

with 500 different species of them i was looking for a general answer. which you gave.  :D
honestly i just know of 4 kinds, large brown, small black, yellow and green. keeps it simple for me.

Kiwingenuity

Well could have kept us guessing a while..

Heres something easy..

And yes - its an adapter, but for what?

oldmech

gun cleaning rod thread adapter for different thread size patch jags , brushes, and or bore mops.

Kiwingenuity

Well, guess a few people also have about 10 of them laying around.. your turn (again)  :thumb:

slipperymongoose

Some sort if oil breather thing?
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

no not that complex at all. shall we say it is a piece of hardware. a way to secure something.

pliskin

Flint striker/spark maker?
Why are you looking here?

Kiwingenuity

Is it a threaded insert which you rivet to sheet steel / aluminium? I used to use the rivnut things on switchboards, just dont know the name of this little beast.

oldmech

very close. installation is a bit different.

Kiwingenuity

With the grooves I would guess cast or moulded into the material

oldmech

you are guessing correctly.

pliskin

looks like some kind of little fuel filter.
Why are you looking here?

Kiwingenuity

So so far we know it is a threaded insert (like a captured nut) that is moulded into plastic (grooves prevent is spinning), and it does not expand when a bolt is screwed into it (to prevent the plastic it is moulded into from cracking).

Does anyone know the name for this little beast?

oldmech

kiwi vou are verrrrry close. but i may have misunderstood one of your replies. this insert type is not typically cast or moulded in to the material it is going into.  at least i have never seen that application.
here is a small clue.
the installation too which is attachedl in the fist post which has holes to match the insert is removed after installation.
sorry for the confusion on my part.
i should know how to speak kiwi by now since i am married to one. ;)
