Hmm, XBee wireless RS232 shield for an Arduino - can do some very cool things with these things. Would be interested in whatever application you are putting this to..

Paulcet

The XBee is the upper board, radio and all.  Not a shield in this case.  The lower board isn't really a shield either.  Again, no uC involved.

It's a Series 1.  There is something you can do with Series 1 that you can't do with series 2 or 3.

Here is what is under the XBee radio.

Eh, kinda blurry.  Optocoupler, a few 3904s and associated resistors.

Hmm, the series 1 would do point to point wireless, where the new ones only do a mesh network.

Some sort of Serial / USB over wireless link, but what for...

pliskin

Is it the power circuit for the radio?
Why are you looking here?

what plisky said... you making a home made radio/intercom thingy for your bike!?

Paulcet

Well, the power circuit is just the voltage regulator as mentioned by Adidasguy (and the two capacitors).  Something else the Series one will do that the two will not...  Keep reading!  Oh, and no serial or data communication over this link.  These XBees are great for that, but I just don't need all that data.

This in the picture is the receiver.  The transmitter looks nearly identical.

Nothing for the bike.  I am considering a BlueGiga bluetooth module if I get really ambitious for the bike.

Not wiFi. Some other protocol over 900MHz.

Well, you forced me to read the maunal for the series 1 - you can send analog values directly from one Xbee module to another in series 1.

Remote battery monitoring?

Paulcet

Close enough Kiwi.  I can also send general purpose I/O directly from one to the other.  So, I have a flow meter with discrete outputs @24vdc for low flow and high temperature.  The location of the meter is in a room about 50 feet from the operator's control panel.  I can run conduit and wire over or under a glass tempering furnace, about 100+ feet for the under route, or make a wireless "wire".    The XBee "transmitter" is set up to monitor two digital inputs, and the "receiver" is set up to ouptut whatever is on the inputs of the transmitter.

Thats a pretty sweet little module being able to do straight level sending - have done quite a lot of telemetry design over the years, but usually a little more complicated.
Simple = good  :thumb:

Am stuck trying to resolve some politics on a design at the moment - if anyone has a item of interest post it up.  Otherwise I can post one later today.

Damn i could use this on the goped to eliminate some wiring. cept for one minor issue. no power system on the pig.

Heres something novel - clues: it has a small hole at one end, this important to how this widget works.. and it works once.

slipperymongoose

That wouldn't be the ball you get inside cans of Guinness to get that foamy head would it? If so when you said widget that was the clue for me as I just watched mega factories guinness brewery
Some say that he submitted a $20000 expense claim for some gravel

And that if he'd write a letter of condolance he would at least spell your name right.

Kiwingenuity

Yeah, I thought about the word widget - you are correct  :thumb: - think a few other brewers use them now too.

yamahonkawazuki

LOL wtf. and i watched this show too

What would this be used for?

And yeah Yamma I like watching mega factories. Wish they would come here see how we do stuff
