I put my sonic springs stickers (decals) on today and cleaned the bike up, they are pretty nice looking. And for those of you like me who want to see the stickers before they come in the mail, heres some pictures. If you dont understand how to get the stickers, its like the final page of the ordering process, there is a little box that you check for either white or black free stickers. Comes with two!

Hey guys, so bike was running perfectly last night until I got to the last stop sign before my street. When i puked in the clutch idle was at 3k, turned the screw down it dropped to soften and slowly to 1k and felt like it was gunna die so i adjusted the idle screw back up and out didn't raise the idle at all no matter how many turns i gave it. I parked the bike left out running to listen to it and it sounded boggy idling around 1500 and had very sluggish low end throttle..

I killed it, brought it in, and then it smelt like gas and motor was burning something off the surface cause i could hear the sizzling. I looked and the tips of the head under the valve cover gaskets were wet. Fuel lines wee all still connected and did not seem to be leaking. Haven't tried to start it since. I was thinking just maybe fuel delivery problems again?

Look for any leaks. Could the tank be leaking?
Dry things off. Fill it up with gas.
Dry off again and look for any signs of leaks.
Fuel delivery problem would not be no fuel - it sounds like fuel leaks.
How much gas in the tank now?
Gas in the air box? If so, that would be stuck floats and it is flooding out, spilling gas all over the place.

I looked for leaks, no gasoline leaks.

Lots of gas in the tank, no gas in the air filter unless it evaporated in the little time it took me to take the tank off.

Air filter was dry but its super dirty:

This was the only leak I could found and I thought, what could this possibly be coming from?

So I took the tank off and found this (bottom of the tank was dry):

Oil coming from the crank case breather cover. This piece was broken when I got the bike so decided to temporarily fix it and never got around to fixing it for good cause I didnt have any problems. Could this be my problem? I figure the oil leaking out is from the new stiff suspension rattling everything loose.

I also found out there was a bunch of gunk in the inline fuel filters. Both filters had this brown gunk.

I decided to put the battery back on and start it up, started right up, idled normally and rpms came right back down after revving no floating. This was just with the left over gas in the carbs, so I think with some new fuel lines (no filters) and a new crank case breather cover. You guys think this will fix it? Thats my best bet.

Fix that and it will greatly improve things.

To check for gas in the air box, remove the air filter and look in. You can see the bottom where it drains and see if gas is coming out of the intake of the carbs.

jacob92icu

So, i got a crank case breather cover, gasket and air filter from Adidas a couple days back and i took the old piece of crap breather off and i saw what i believe to be a cardboard gasket... Its a pain inn the ass to get off and tomorrow I'm leaving for a few weeks to train. Also i found a small pool of gasoline where I left my tank because the reserve line is slowly dripping. Any thoughts?

Fitting in the tank petcock loose? Tap the brass tubes back in with a mallet.
Or is it leaking from the tank petcock shut off valve? Seen that. The o-ring gets dry and cracks if it hasn't been turned for a longtime. Replace o-ring. You may have to drain gas to take tank off, remove metal clip and take out valve thingy to replace the o-ring.
Or loose hose connection. Seen that, too.

I fixed the crank case breather and removed all the old gasket and replaced it. Went very well. Surprisingly my oil leak is fixed now! not a single drop all day!

I also replaced the two fuel filters, cleaned the hoses and the airbox hose with carb cleaner. At first I was going pretty dang fast and I ran all of the fuel out of the carbs and the filters were too much resistance to the flow and couldnt fill the float bowls. Started running weird and died, but then I ran it on prime to fill it up and rode like a grandma the rest of the day. Rode real well.

Rode to the Kirkland waterfront with the girlfriend. An awesome day today!! Cant wait to start riding to work again! yesss.

Okay, I suppose I spoke too soon... When i got home last night, the bike was smelling like gasoline. I look down and sure enough the left carb was over flowing and leaking out. I drained the bowls, sprayed some carb cleaner in there, and called it  a night. got up in the morning to try and ride to work, put the choke on full, primed it for a little, started it, and it was just sitting at 1500 ~ 2200 on full choke. The throttle was sluggish. Does this sound like a problem that could be fixed by cleaning the carbs?

Cleaned the carbs, dislodged a bunch of crap from the main fuel line that goes from the petck to the carbs. Rejetted back to stock jets 122.5, installed the new air filter. It runs so much better!

I also cleaned it and lubed the chain and went for a tiny ride to test out the new jet settings and cleaned carbs.

After:

New and old air filter:

Heres some of the junk that was in the main passage way to the carbs:

4 pieces like this:

1 very clogged jet:

And lots of carb cleaner, now it runs awesome.

Quick update,

Installed the clip ons I bought from Patrick. They are awesome. Brings the front down a little from the stock replica bars I had and with the help of my new links I will have a totally different riding position. Also, I will be going to pick up the full Jardine after work from Patrick.

Turning seems to be more instantaneous than before and they are quite comfortable.

Most of you probably already heard the news. My bike has been hit and totaled.

The only damage actually keeping me off the road is:

  • Forks
  • Fender (dont need one)
  • 1 clip on bar
  • brake caliper
  • brake pads
  • and the piece that holds the clutch lever on

I just saw a full set of gsxr forks with calipers and brake lever come up on craigslist for $225. I have always wanted to do it and the people here at the shop tell me they can press the bearings in and I am sure they can make the spacer.

My question to you guys is do you think it is worth it? or should I just replace the forks with some oem ones?

Stay safe,

Jake

By the way,

Here is how the Jardine sounded the day before. So nice!

Sound quality is from my phone so please forgive me

So I tried looking at the exhaust today, and couldnt really find anything that would make it sound like this. Keep in mind the choke is pretty much on full. I dont know cause I dismantled all the left hand control and didnt feel like warming it up to let it idle.

Sound quality is a little bad but it sounds somewhat close to having no headers installed.

Here are some things I found that could be the culprit,

Loose header bolt?

Pretty substantial dent in headers? (IMO least likely)

Or a tear in the heat shield of the can?

I will probably take it to a shop to have them shorten the can up to where the Jardine sticker is, IMO it looks better and could possibly fix a part of the problem.

What do you guys think?

Stay safe,

Jake

Loose header bolt can cause that. Most likely when the exhaust system took a hit, the mounting bracket on that side got bent so it is now loose. Remove the exhause... put in new gaskets.... and re-attach.

If you suspect a tear in the can, put some aluminum furnace tape over that to seal it and see if that helps.

With your ear, you should be able to tell where sound is coming from.

BockinBboy

Yeah, my vote is on the actual header bolt area.  As addy suggested, I bet you need fresh gaskets in there.  If you had a blow to the header, that could have smashed the gasket down and gave you a gap.

The gaskets seemed to be fine, right was a little more crushed than the left which was expected. I think the real culprit here is the fact that the whole left side of the header got really bent.

Couple options.

1. Examine it and compare the ends on a flat surface. If both are level or really close, you should be able to make it fit but may have to put in 2 or 3 crush washers so it can squish down at that slight mis-alignment and make a good seal

2. Might get a muffler company to straighten it

3. Jardine is back in production. Contact them for a replacement part.

Bring it over and we can look at it. There are spare engines here that we can check the fit on.

jacob92icu

Hey! Bringing it back from death, just to let you guys know I ended up selling the bike to this kid and his dad, for the kids first bike, was really cool, hope he makes it over to Patricks this summer. I fixed the bike up back to even better condition then it was before selling, heres some pictures of her final hours.

And here it was meeting its step sister for the first time

I started the CBR build thread here too after a while of having the CBR

I miss my GS from time to time, but when I ride my CBR I pretty much forget about it :P Girlfriend doesnt though.
