That's cool. My dad was an old school Ma bell  (Bell Systems) guy. I doubt he ever say one of those. In fact I'm going to get some pictures of his old "tech" stuff for my next turn.

I'm in the middle of my first phone system install at work now. The list of features on modern business phone system is mind boggling. And it all fits in a box about the size of a couple desktop computers. I'm learning a lot of new stuff about what they call "unified messaging systems".

I dare say I'm getting to old for this stuff.
Why are you looking here?

Speaking of phones go to walmart pick up the handset on one of their phones and hit function 1020 which basically puts every phone terminal in the facility on speaker/broadcast mode. aka page mode

The exchange card I showed you was a rare install here - we had a lot of the British made cross bar style exchanges.

Just did the VOIP thing at work - our clients who have private wide area telephone networks are also going VOIP.  Some pretty sweet gear out there, but really difficult to configure when you want to cross between VOIP and 2 wire / 4 wire systems.

Looking forward to a good challenge

Here is interesting youtube video about old telephone and telephone jobs. My, my how the world has changed as Mummy says. I like electromechanical things and I would have liked to work in old telephone exchange. Very noisy, ha ha ha must wear motorcycle earplugs!

I think traditional lines are on the way out - the biggest issue that Telcos have faced with going for VOIP is the fact that the traditional phone was a service that could be maintained during civil emergencies with battery backup.

Cellular phones have changed all of that - the decline of the public phone, the abundance of mobiles and the fact a cellular site with a backbone of fibre is pretty robust in terms of maintaining service. I think eventually you will see VOIP take over - its already started with home users here, and a lot of people don't care as long as it works and is cost effective.

Amazing to see how quickly the gear has changed though - 50 or 60 years. Only issue I see is digital routing edge synchronisation which is using GPS - we have one big solar storn and we are all going to be stuffed.. Thats why I keep a MW/LW radio squirreled away..

In sydney last year had vacattion job with Japanese Education Industry company. All phone call to Japan HO on Skype. V-conference all the time to Tokyo on internet. The boss in Sydney always trying to keep telecommunications cheap and he did good job there.  Australia also crazy now on national broadband so speed will get much faster.  Speed now suk when I think about internet speed at home. You have many troubles with squirels also like the adidasman in other post? This is so interesting. So many predators everywhere. My predators in my house in Australia are called possums. Very very noisy. Very smelly predator too.

First time I've ever heard a possum called a predator.

Gotta watch those damned Kiwis, they shoot possums.
Wherever you may be, there you are.

Yip - guilty as charged.. the old man used to poison them with Cyanide too.. used to get them for fur back in the '80s.

A wonderful example of an introduced species with no natural predators...

Possum pies, possum gloves, possum socks, possum hats, roast possum, fried possum, possum stew, possum & kumara, possum & puha, possum jackets, possum hangi/hungi? , possum n chips......

Heheheheheheheh   :flipoff:

Maybe for the benefit of our NA friends we should just point out we are talking about the Brush tail possum here.. Otherwise they could suspect we are slightly nuts for wanting to make winter clothing out of Opossums..

Found a worthy challenge yet Paulcet?

A drill set up with a drive wheel and the trigger zip tied.  The sled floats along the rollers and the drill turns the rollers.

Not sure what the clear hose is.

It looks like the conduit is being used not only as a handle but doubling as a vacuum extension.

Your cleaning the rollers some how.

That's it. What you don't see in the video is the driven end of the rollers, and what the drill is driving, which is a brush roll. The clear hose is for water.

At first I thought the drill was driving a wire brush, but then changed my mind and decided it was turning the rollers.

Here she is.  Extra points if you not only know what it is, but know exactly which product it comes from.
I bet a lot of you have one of these somewhere in your house.
