Mixture screw plugs (removal)

Hi guys.

Couple of  quick questions?

What's the easiest way to remove the mixture plugs?

Next question, once they are out what should they be set too turn wise?

Bikes an 02', 43000km stock filter, can and jets.

The reason I ask is plugs are showing lean and im wondering if I can get the mixture richer without rejetting.

If I do need to rejet I was going to go to 20 on the pilot and 132.5 on the mains as suggested by Buddaha.

What do the mixture screws need to be at with that jetting?

Isn't 20 on the pilots going smaller than stock?  I thought they were 37.5 or something.  Most people go up to 40s.



As for the mixture plugs, I think a power-drill is really the only way to get them out.


Someone with more knowledge and experience with me will come along soon enough to correct me if I'm wrong, though.

2001-2003 according to rejetting in the wiki is

Pilot=17.5
Mid=60
Main=127.5

No worries.

I was just looking at the mixture plugs, can I just pop a small hole 1/16"-1/8" and put a small terminating screw driver in and pop it out or do I need to drill the whole cap out?

I just took a drill to mine, and they popped right off without needing a screw driver or anything.

Ok. Now before I go drilling my carbs, in the picture below the mixture screw is under the bottom plug correct?

The other plug is just a core plug for blocking unused ports?

Yup! That's the one you want to drill out. Mine popped off while drilling, but you may need a small screw to put in so you can pull the plug out.

3 turns? 3+ turns?

Got mine out with a self tapping metal screw and a screwdriver. The plugs are brass, and very soft, so it doesn't take much effort to get into them. Just get the screw a couple turns in, then pull it out with a pair of vice grips.

Its a useable idea, however I have received carbs with that fitting cracked and a screw stuck in the brass plug.
Dont ask me how, but someone managed to cram the screw in the plug, open it a wee bit and cram it deeper into the hole ... splitting it. And decided to send it on to me ...

Sounds good guys. I will tackle it at some point this week.

Buddha, will turning the mixture screws out to 3 turns help with the cold starts and getting an overall richer mixture on the plugs or will it only help with my idle meaning I still need to rejet?

Just wanted to post a quick update, I know you guys like to hear when problems are solved.

I pulled the A/F screw caps and took them out to 3 turns from lightly seated (dont worry Buddha, no gorilla strength used  :)).

I also checked the valve clearances to find that both of my exhaust valves were at .030mm.

Re-shimed those to .08-0.10mm and low and behold it feels like a new bike.

It's not super warm today maybe 20 C and she fired up and was warm in 30 seconds or so. I took choke off and she held idle beautifully.

Took her for a 30 km spin and to my surprise there is no bogging in 1st or second now, she has lots of power and it didnt die at any lights, just sat there purring away at 1200 rpm, with no bounce.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who responded in this post and my first post which helped get me to this point.

Now its just time to ride  :D
