Thanks for the input snake. BTW what's that steel wool looking stuff I took a picture of? I'm not really sure where it came from. All I know is after I removed the valve cover, it was laying next to my spark plugs

Would that brown gasket above the valve cover being trashed cause any engine noise or cause my bike to run poorly

one thing to be careful of.. taking too many parts of the bike apart at once. Get some things wrapped back up. You would he surprised how quickly you forget exactly how things go.back together.

I learned from experience that reinstalling carbs while high on carb cleaner fumes does not end well. It's good to label things. I like to take pictures as I'm disassembling for quick reference.

Thanks for the input, I have the parts I took out and apart very well separated and catalogues, I too have made the mistake of taking too many things apart and coming back to them too late

No updates yet. I think I'm just going to order a tenet kit for the k&n lunchbox and v&h exhaust according to the gs wiki that way I know what's there and I know its all good. I have to order ages gaskets as well.

I missed your post asking but the steel wool thing is the case breather filter I believe, it goes under the piece with the gasket you were asking about.

To clarify a little, the "steel wool thing" is item 7 in the diagram below:
